2020.09.28 15:43 Dedmon3000 Watching competitive Hearthstone (September 28 through October 4)

Hi guys. Before I get to past and future streaming action, I wanted to let you know that I found some details about the World Championship. More details are down near the end of this post.
The Championship comes at an interesting time - near when I expect the new expansion to be released. The big money tournament could be just before its release, which would obviously provide a lot of pre-release promotion; or the tourney could be just after its release, which would provide a lot of heartburn for our competitors (not that I feel sorry for them, at all), as well as the ultimate post-release promotion. I'm rooting for chaos, but we'll see.
And now, back to our scheduled action.

Upcoming events:
If I happen to miss something that should be added, let me know and I will do so. Thanks for reading!

2020.09.28 10:40 Ford456fgfd [Blythe dolls] Betrayal and backlash in the big-eyed doll community when a convention organizer loses $23K

WHO IS BLYTHE
Blythe was a fashion doll produced by Kenner (perhaps better known as the Star Wars figures company) for a single year in the seventies. Inspired by Betty Boop, she had a large head and huge eyes, with the gimmick that when you pulled a string on the back of her head, her eyes closed, and when they opened they changed color and expression.
Groovy and glam Blythe did not do well in the toy market, probably because many found her proportions and wide-eyed stare unsettling, as many* still do. However, decades later she was rediscovered, and when TV producer Gina Garan was introduced to creative director Junko Wong and released a book of photography entitled THIS IS BLYTHE featuring the doll, Blythe was catapulted into the spotlight.
Blythe fever swept the world, she appeared in ad campaigns for Target’s Alexander McQueen collab and on boxes of hair dye, and Japanese company Takara, makers of the extremely popular Licca doll, acquired the rights to her image and began producing reproductions in fresh, modernized outfits and hairstyles, ushering in a new era of rabid fans. The craze took root in Japan (always ahead of the curve when it comes to big-eyed cuteness) and rapidly spread to the western world, including a bustling North American fanbase. Blythe had finally found her audience, and a diverse audience it was—she attracted toy collectors, old women, elitist BJD fans, hobby seamstresses, sculptors, goths, pastel kawaii princesses, pop surrealist artists, and more, all united by their love of Blythe’s quirky looks and the burgeoning and extremely popular customization community that kept pushing the limits of what a Blythe could look like.
The community thrived on Flickr and on several message boards, perhaps most notably a forum that we will call Blythe Castle, a fantasy-themed wonderland of buying, selling, trading, generous hints-and-tips sharing, and photo exchanging. The community grew both expansive and tightly-knit, engaging in photo challenges, sharing mail, and having community in-jokes and memes. Eventually it became clear that with such a diverse fanbase uniting so passionately over one hobby, a convention simply must take place—and so Blythecons began.
BLYTHECON
The first couple of American Blythecons—and the Blythecons in other countries—aren’t relevant to this post. Suffice to say that they were a smash hit, the vendors did a brisk business, photos of giant piles of big-eyed dolls arranged on staircases flooded Flickr pages, and everyone had a grand old time planning for next year. Information for those early days—including for the drama we are about to discuss—has largely been lost to the sands of time, so I apologize for any gaps in detail.
Blythecon 2012 went off swimmingly with no major hiccups, and kudos poured in for the event organizers, including two Blythe Castle administrators: we’ll call them Eri and Red. Despite neither of them living anywhere close to Dallas, the city in which the con was held, they organized remotely and the attendees, to judge from the internet chatter at the time, had a great time. Blythecon 2012 showed the community shaping up into a real force: there were demonstrations, contests, and immediate plans for Blythecon 2013, to be held in New York City in October.
Prebooked tickets sold briskly in 2012 and the community was from an early date abuzz with excitement about the upcoming event, which promised to be even better than the Dallas show. Plans were made early, despite an unusual lack of communication coming down from above about concrete details.
People had faith in Red and Eri after the enormous success of the previous year, and held tight despite the occasional uneasiness as the con date crept closer. Which made it all the more shocking when eventually, just a month before the convention was scheduled to occur, Eri made a public post on a journal devoted to chronicling scammers and shady business dealings in the dolly community, and the information rapidly spread across the Castle.
THE EXPOSURE
The explosive post was brief, but ugly: Red had informed Eri that the Blythecon money, which had been kept in Red’s personal account, had been garnished. A grim line in the post summed up the situation in brief: “$23428.18 is gone. I have received $3893.36 back and will need $8906.64 by next Friday, to make BlytheCon happen.”
Red was apparently selling dolls on the Blythe Castle forums to attempt to recoup the money. In the comments to the post, Eri laid out the entire email history between herself and Red—at least dating from the time that Red finally began answering emails, as she had apparently been ignoring them.
In the lengthy discussions that followed—dating back to mid-August for a convention, remember, slated to happen in October—Red claimed that the money had been garnished a month before, and that she had attempted suicide in the aftermath. She repeatedly brought up her suicide attempt, her mental health, and her limited internet access (unexplained), until Eri was compelled to state, firmly, that feelings of guilt were not relevant to the conversation: the money needed to be accounted for, and quickly, or Eri would have to call off the event.
Eri in the emails also mentions the grim reality of her own situation: while Red’s name is on the financials, her own name is on the event, and when this all comes crumbling down she will not only face public backlash in a community where many people have her address and contact information, she can be—according to her lawyer—held legally an accomplice. She demands Red come clean publicly, even if it has to be in a vague way, and Red demurs, saying that her own legal advice had been to the contrary, apparently not realizing why Eri is asking this of her.
In the increasingly cagey series of emails Red makes various promises to supply money from this or that location on some future date, and offers to send Eri a pile of dolls and “sundries” (clothes and accessories for dolls) to sell to raise funds, then continues to be cagey about the tracking numbers for said packages. She says that cancelling the event would not “be fair” for attendees, in a moment that one can only describe as a little tone-deaf. Eri, having run out of ultimatums and having involved the police, went public.
Understandably, all hell broke loose. I myself discovered this when returning from a long hiatus and finding Red’s username on the forum with BANNED written under it, several deleted threads, and a notably sluggish and uninvolved community that had been bouncing along speedily months before, in a moment akin to touching one’s fingertips to the ground and murmuring “some great violence occurred here.” But for the moment, there was still a loud contingent of people who insisted: the show must go on. The convention must continue. The money must be gotten, the ticketholders must have something to show for their funds, and the convention, despite everything, must be held.
The promised box of dolls and sundries arrived to Eri two days after the situation went public, and Eri began selling off the dolls to raise money to secure the venue. In the meantime Red continued finalizing sales of dolls she had listed on the Castle forums, and donations poured in from some generous anonymous benefactors, listed by initial in an update post by Eri to assure people that yes—the funds were coming together, and the convention would not, despite everything, be canceled. Eri also mentioned that one member of the community had gotten in touch with an offer to act as financial adviser which she—wisely—had accepted. Equally wisely, she had insisted to Red that money raised from Red’s doll sales be sent to an independent Paypal account and not Eri’s own personal one.
In the meantime, Eri came under scrutiny, and the community—quite understandably—had questions. Why wasn’t the venue secured earlier, when tickets went on sale the year before? Why did Eri cover for Red for weeks of back-and-forth emailing instead of freely informing the public what was at stake? Shouldn’t Eri step down as admin of the Castle forums and let someone else take the reins? The debate raged on, but still, there was a more pressing issue—the convention itself.
THE CONVENTION
Miraculously, the story has a better ending than such hobby drama stories generally do. Doubtless many started this story and formed an impression of a canceled con or a disaster, but—shockingly—neither happened.
The community rallied. The funds were acquired. Legal action was pursued in earnest against Red by both Eri and members of the community, and the convention, against all odds, went on. In October, in New York City, hundreds of Blythe fans gathered at the hotel and there were vendors, demonstrations, and—of course—lots and lots of dolly photos. Videos taken from the convention floor look cheery, post-Facebook chatter is pleasantly joyful, and all in all few seem to even remember that the con funds were absconded with by a respected member of the community.
THE FALLOUT
Despite the success of Blythecon 2013, the stain was there, and the final post on the 2013 convention’s Facebook page—on the heels of several happy discussions about vendor tables—is a detailed list of instructions for pursuing legal action against Red. The Castle forums never quite recovered from the shock of Red’s betrayal, and Eri, while maintaining her post as admin, never had quite the public trust that she had had before. The forums continued to be active, but the pall cast by the event lingered and probably—although this is speculation—helped contribute to their winding down. The community drifted to Facebook, torn asunder still more by the flagging of Flickr—hitherto a primary gathering place for fans—and to Instagram, and to this day remains fragmented. Blythe Castle still stands, but between the 2013 fallout and classic forums falling out of fashion, it is a very quiet—and often silent—place.
In a last little stab of drama, some of the buyers of Red’s emergency sale Blythes posted that they had never gotten their dolls. These public conversations peter out. The final post remaining on the original discussion post is an ominous reply to someone asking if restitution was ever made. Posted in December by one of Red’s buyers, two months after the convention, it reads in its entirety: “Nope.”
Blythecons in North America, however, continued. As far as I am aware, there has been a successful Blythecon every year until Blythecon Calgary 2020, when COVID-19 did what Red couldn’t and robbed Blythe fans of their annual place to hang out with their big-eyed plastic pals, bonding over their shared, somewhat eccentric hobby. It continued online, was apparently—for an online convention—pretty successful, and brought a spark of unity to an increasingly-fragmented community.
It’s unlikely that anything will ever replace the close-knit, unified North American Blythe community that existed before 2013. It’s equally unlikely that 2013 was entirely to blame for the fragmentation of the fanbase when so much of it can be chalked up to evolving technology and changing social media landscapes, as well as quality issues with Takara Blythes and the flood of cheap and divisive counterfeits (a subject for another post), but it did undoubtedly have some effect on the Blythe Castle part of it. But although the hobby has grown increasingly far-flung, it remains filled with passionate fans, and many of the names that turned up in discussions about Red’s betrayal, Eri’s cover-up, and last-minute hotel bookings back in 2013 still show up in conversations about Blythe today—and conventions, along with their funds, are handled with a lot more scrutiny.
*I love Blythe but the first time I bought one I turned her face to the wall while I slept. It takes some getting used to.

2020.09.28 10:39 rejamrejam [Blythe dolls] Betrayal and backlash in the big-eyed doll community when a convention organizer loses $23K

Why did Eri cover for Red for weeks of back-and-forth emailing instead of freely informing the public what was at stake? Shouldn’t Eri step down as admin of the Castle forums and let someone else take the reins? And why on EARTH was the money being held in Red's personal bank account? The debate raged on, but still, there was a more pressing issue—the convention itself.

2020.09.28 04:44 MannyTrejo 'Which media would you consider a life-changing experience?'

Originally inspired by a Reddit thread regarding media and how it changed our lives, I invite anyone interested in sharing that which caused them reflection or provided lessons that later proved relevant to do the same. I since expanded that far beyond the limitations of Reddit comments here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/manuel-ignacio-mier-aguirre/which-media-would-you-consider-a-life-changing-experience/129415288891059/
"Lest I forget to mention my own failure from following the same route despite The Wall by Pink Floyd being one of the pieces of audiovisual media I’ve most watched throughout my lifetime. My younger brother had perhaps already built The Wall within himself, by his own failures whether born from his use of worse substances than any I’d dare ever consume during our adolescence, or facing other trials lacking my or another’s wisdom I neglected to share distracted by other substances and my own failures to retreat and regroup effectively to tackle the problem I’d faced after being denied so many other paths I’d have chosen before the one I’m on. For months he’d pestered me with radical propaganda and politically-sensitive philosophy over topics I’d already come to terms with, and I left that vector of intrusion open feeling concern for his plight and worry, yet after a former amorous connection from abroad offered we meet in Spain, he revealed my folly for trusting in him and his true intention. Immediately after she had so offered we might meet, I was faced with threats by my brother and friends of his intimidating me, attempting to coerce me into accepting Catholicism with claims of violence should I not, falsely accusing me of being guilty of sin worthy of such punishment which left me perplexed.
Confused at the true source of the attack, the disrespect against me caused me to lose my respect usually shown to just about everyone else hoping to incite reprisal from the source, and I do apologize for any offenses made as brick by brick I built The Wall. And just as I built The Wall despite consuming that media many a time, another book I was reading at the time, Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon held the answer for the paranoia I'd came to suffer upon detecting Maoism to be the potential source yet lacking knowledge of Maoist movements beyond Chairman Mao Zedong's history in China, “If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.” And so, though I still disagree with some actions taken, yet have come to understand better why and decided to simply not even worry about them, only concerned the same doesn't repeat itself here against good people like myself, I do apologize for any offense to the states of China and Russia, and others closer-by but not former President Calderone, because fuck you I’m not going to die in a revolution for your rightwing Catholic oligarchy against leftist Catholic oligarchs, but I’m above the idea of bothering to waste my time dealing with you. You'll get your apology for my public denouncement of your foolish words, whether read by you or any of yours or not, when you rescind them apologetically for your desire to see violence while remaining safely away from it, or when you cross that border to be the point of the lance rifle in your own Catholic hands, where I would perhaps follow you if only out of curiosity to how this turn of events concludes, since already two American military veterans I believe better men than you have been jailed in Venezuela for one of your two desired revolutions. But if things fall to that state anyway, show us if you felt even a mote of that which did help form my soul as I lived in the United States living safely as a citizen of Texas, where I was kicked out just shy of graduating high school as I'd begun cardio training to meet USMC physical requirements eager to help fight religious extremism, deported despite having committed no crime myself, the only minor act of vandalism and offending a friend as a 13 year old dealing with emotional turmoil over new found desires leading me to egg an ex-girlfriend's house, issues I've long matured from since. Please, be our revolutionary George Washington to lead us across a Delaware that never freezes to sneak up on the paramilitary privateers. And I'd accept your apology, since 2020 and the pandemic has left many of us feeling our worlds become smaller and turned irater for it, some with too much time to think, others left to deal with the stress of keeping society running for the rest. Knowing the true enemy likely to be local organized crime, since even some IP addresses that attempted to penetrate some of my accounts purportedly from those nations may have actually been masked by a proxy. just like a virus the June of 2019 which left me having to reformat 2 hard drives and a few USB sticks had changed my browser language to Russian. Not only that, but immediately following my report online to an internationally active police agency my Twitch stream was restreamed to one with a name hostile to law enforcement I reported upon discovery, as an attempt to commit something akin to Swatting against me. Yet I'll withhold from claiming academic, private, or state collusion with organized mafiosos with cyber-crime capabilities akin to the Cali Cartel that succeeded the Medellin Cartel of Columbia, more successful for their more subtle manipulation and corruption of public or private officials compared to the previous cartel's foolishly brazen suppression turned outright war to maintain control, I learned another potential true enemy aside from organized crime I’d always defied and neglected to join despite my minor irregular moderate drug use was French Maoism of the cause the leader was claimed to represent by his peons, but not the nation of France, for French Maoists have also been involved with religious extremism and Maoist terrorism in India and have been deported from India for colluding with violent radical groups, or perhaps both of us as leftists were just turned against each other for looking upon the other through a scanner darkly, and not seeing eye to eye to converse over the same worries.
For even that same amorous connection I came to blame, to accuse with thoughts born of paranoia, to claim her in-collusion with Cambridge Analytica, the case closing up the same month she offered we meet, to claim her the Spanish, to have selected to influence a man into pacifism against soft imperialism through his favorite book, a historical fiction and science fiction novel, after noticing his household’s peculiar Amazon book orders. To claim her nation, among the highest consumers of Latin American cocaine, which she shuns as she does all drug use, yet claiming her through that exchange to be but in-collusion to England’s latest mind control plot after having Cambridge Analytica and its ploys to manipulate public perception through social media and psychological profiling facilitated by artificial intelligence shut down. A scheme reminiscent of England’s control over Chinese slave labor in the 1800’s, where the East India Company would impose opium addiction upon Chinese workers then offer to only pay them with opium and not any currency for their hard labor, but inversed, to better control the flow of cocaine even given to race dog Great Danes yet claiming the source guilty of that few among their populace buy gratuitously. To claim like when the Jews were thrust just having faced the horrors of the Holocaust into their ancestral birth lands to face enemies Great Britain had angered leaving them advisors and equipment left over from the Second World War to make of a colony they could hardly defend themselves, a potential ally should they survive, which they did yet I'll not be twisted against enemies deceived into thinking me 'the rich,' not look upon you so kindly should I survive them in a manner so valiantly to be like Israel continues to stand proudly today. Knowing my fate then would be more like Alan Turing's, a homosexual man vital to the war effort against Third Reich Germany for being a grand mathematician, to be chemically castrated after I'd stopped being useful same as she no longer invited me to share my physical desire for her and hers immediately vanished when I lost my cool and became irate, no longer a source of tranquility for her and words of praise for her that would once leave a flustered woman telling me I should write romance novels. And so, a tribe from which the man Jesus Christ of Nazareth hailed, after over two thousand years of being run from place to place to take up whatever jobs were allowed to them, even chancing upon banking out of luck the Christians of Europe didn’t like math because it was hard and allowed the poorer among them to see harsher truths when analyzing the statistics, till finally they should take up the sword to defend their ancestral home and never again be run from anywhere; A warrior empire tribe along the Southwest coast of Mexico was coaxed into shedding the obsidian by the book inspired by the man Jesus Christ, or the many he represents impaled upon the cross, perhaps of the last ones unconquered, an Atheist of mixed race, to be pacified by only a more elaborate science fiction tale and love for a woman. Till she recanted such offer we meet finally after 7 years, and only recently could we reconcile, yet despite her insistence we remain friends, I did feel best we cut the cord so I may better move on, and only did plead she remain open to perhaps making another plan for Spain should I successfully progress from the current pit I’d been led into and allowed myself to be fooled into. Still I’m glad we could speak face to face to quell my paranoid fears, and to once-more blaspheme as she’d coaxed me into joining her in a chant of ‘Fuck God,’ now relieved that perhaps my worse fear of criminal mafia-state collusion to replace me in her life and the potential political and economic plans I had entertained for our relationship was perhaps excessive, lest it be proven true by exactly that happening, by a criminal or someone preferred by a criminal for their ignorance or silence seeing the same but knowing me being innocent of complicit complacency or action with crime being a risk since I’m also prone to pointing out other’s acts of violent or abusive crime against women and vulnerable people such as children and the mentally ill like myself.
And I forgave her as she revealed to me how powerless she’d felt to make me feel better, to calm me, to divert the topic as I remained ragefully fixated with a vindictive appetite, leading to her not communicating sooner out of fear I’d simply bite a hand that would once caress me again. And she forgave me, but wisely made clear it shall not be forgotten, properly since another act to a former lover nearby also caused that shock with reality and reflection I required to ease myself out of a self-indoctrination born out of my own psychological and philosophical knowledge fused with theology, not structured to a title, but ample enough to do such. When I, knowing the threat against my potentially demanded by a French Maoist, with no relation to Chinese Maoism as I’d learned, if it was indeed a Maoist and not a criminal using the name as a mask, since even FARC was a criminal organization despite noble leftist intent twisted towards violence for financing through drug sales, responded to a younger lover’s claims and desires to accept offers from a French man she’d met before to leave for France prior to finishing her preparatory education. Where I feared like many woman with their education disrupted here often are, she would be prostituted abroad, yet I neglected the fact the same crime is committed to others here in Mexico by Mexicans, not just foreigners, still her tears and angered accusations of me a Nazi and a patan after I’d answered to her it was her Patriotic duty to remain and finish at least her preparatory education caused me to reflect upon my value of Liberty, and that I shall not become a hypocrite, by denying another their liberty. Another book, The Life and Death of Socrates, reflected upon concerning this, where Socrates was made to commit suicide for espousing the societal values of religion yet denying the fantasy such supernatural beings exist leading to accusations of perverting the youth, I found myself in another similar position as an Atheist also espousing rule of law yet wishing for some minor changes to it, in a place where power has corrupted rule of law and institutions academic, private, and public at many levels in some places, despite the current administration’s efforts to cleanse this and make of Mexico a changed place, still ongoing some chancing upon the PRI’s collusion being revealed to take their place or so I believe, likely without the upper administration noticing nor allowing this yet the executive power that is the Mexican eagle and the institutions of police and military might has too often come to be ensnared by many coiled snakes about its talons as it struggles to snap at them with a tired beak one by one.
I've since fixed the security errors that made past cyber-attacks against me possible, fearing our personal data to have been intruded, to laugh off the attempts to brute force into my Outlook account knowing the attempts require a second device to authenticate log-on, after months spent seeding misleading details as a joke and hope to call the attention of more eyes to this direction, still the grandest joke remains one played upon myself, as many were acts of disrespect I'd not have committed if I'd known with clearer mind I'd still be around months later, and not enslaved an indoctrinated drone to poorly paid farm labor for the foreseeable future. Thinking myself so clever for claiming falsely to be a Nazi and adopting ideals from another National Socialist movement that founded a sovereign nation and its ascent to increased geopolitical influence, crafting a narrative born not just of conscious negation of another side to it, but also my perceptual barriers lacking sympathy to the Catholic church particularly when threatened by Catholic Extremists, till recently I shamefully learned that the Polish Catholics whom shared the Jews plight against the Nazis were more than few I'd known of, but to be in-actuality in at least the tens of thousands to have perished alongside other political dissidents in concentration camps in a manner I'd never allow repeated here, the number of official Polish Catholic clergy slain by the Nazis, aptly the same number as the year of my birth dated anno domini after the life of Christ, 1992. Still the only Abrahamic religion I'll accept, should an offer be enticing to join them, or I face such desperation potentially with another lapse of mental illness not wishing to return to my own tailored self-indoctrination since it just made me more enraged and insane designed to take advantage of recently onset psychosis to negate the possibility of someone else indoctrinating me into Christianity, shall be Judaism. Till then, I'll remain a Taoist, and a Humanist Atheist, with some ideals adopted from the Sikh and their belief that all Gods are real if only in how they affect the minds of my potential enemies should they not turn friends, or leave me be, and my own, perhaps will remain a Taoist Atheist till I die. I’ll never again make such stupid insensitive jokes till now uncharacteristic of me since maturing beyond adolescence, now that I’ve got my better mind mostly back despite some damage leaving me with a difficulty to focus on arithmetic and programming, I was making strides of progress previously unseen towards last year before all these events spiked my mental health problems that have been usually more subtle since preadolescence. My intent was to claim myself one to incite the group that threatened me to act on their claims, then reveal that eugenicists, as that cause claimed, even attempted to persuade me towards, are indeed Nazis.
Ha-ha, look, its Dr. Sun Yat-sen but with a 16 year old companion in a state 16 is age of consent compared to one of the real man of past history, however appropriate it was at that time and place and not now, and his 13 year old wife, its Adolf Hitler but not a hypocrite since his ultra-nationalism did not become corroded by racism, to be a defense for the rights of Mexicans of every color and religion, its Cobra Commander as a playful reference to a bisexuality and sexual experience yet to be entirely completed, the former I've had to abandon, preferring women where most places that would embrace it immediately find me with many men encroaching upon my space where I'd father few if any, preferably only those ruder, meaner, more muscular, and bearded much like myself. I prefer sexual fluidity theory, so I can lie to everyone and uninviting homosexuals claiming myself heterosexual, and perhaps reveal that to the right homosexual that could fulfill either my dreams of a Francis Bacon the painter's physically abusive relationship, knowing the violence just fantasy better treated, or an older guide and tutor much like Ancient Greek apprenticeship was to some young men, the penetration of knowledge connected to physical act, to be taken as I would a woman since male bodies don't excite my member yet I'd not shy from another's desires aided by a woman's presence or chemical assistance, and always a heterosexual to all women except to lesbians who'd know otherwise. Since it'd be temporary even if come to be a life-long friendship, my marriage if it is found, if this state deserves my seed, to be with a woman whose chosen me without ulterior influence same as I've chosen her, meeting by chance as I met my first love, an English-Australian woman and other lovers since. Luckily I found a better stance than LGBTQ flaming pride I still support, for them, regarding my own sexuality with sexual fluidity theory, when I dusted off the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' abandoned by the United States Military to be found by me at a Salvation Army like the many artefacts that adorned our family's first apartment and house in the United States. Ha-ha, look, its Diogenes de Sinope laughing his ass off at the many academics claiming him stupider because of their skewed perspective judging too harshly by the past to see that they want to see so they don't reflect upon their own sin, looking at irrelevant old documents, and through a scanner darkly. Snickering at the creatives claiming themselves original then proving otherwise for claiming my lack of originality where I don’t have to criticize them such, simply allowing them to put the label on their heads, while putting words in my mouth to safeguard their egos. Still, I do protect my ego excessively sometimes as well, but only because such systematic abuse makes it necessary, I’ll turn off the lantern when I’m confronted with honest men and women, and my disrespect was also because often the most honest men and women are those the rest would find armed and away from them to uphold their safety with the safety off. And laughing quietly with a small tear at how abuse has become so thorough and appropriation so in the hands of the abusers, at those who'd reveal themselves the oppressor for getting mad someone playfully take the mask of Ximen Bao, when he is more like a villager pointing out the elders and the village priestesses' abuse of women, Ximen Bao's mask though not belonging any one person, now that he is long gone but ancient Chinese history of a talented politician and hydraulics engineer to have tended to many overflowing rivers and removed institutionalized systematic abuse of women hidden by religion, perhaps more appropriately a certified software engineer or hacker, and uniformed policemen, policewomen, and uniformed military or their equivalent properly taking the place of Ximen Bao's guards and soldiers who drowned the village elders abusing women and the priestesses aiding them by selecting and coercing women for Habao the river God. Or those who'd become irate I'd take the mask of Diogenes de Sinope for doing the same when japing at other philosophers with more credential, where that mask belongs to those without academic title, even those with a criminal past like the real man's past as an exile for vandalizing, shaving off silver bits from Greek currency to accumulate and resell, but there is the mask of a particular Hebrew himself I'll never claim myself to be like, nor bigger than, not dare to take the mask of since that man born to woman of a man's seed showed a humble man could conquer an empire.
'And the UN, UNnazi-ed the world forever,' I could write an essay picking apart Idiocracy but it was not life changing, perhaps more the film inspired by events in Timothy Cavendish's life enjoyed by a clone broken free from her religious indoctrination before her confession and demise never knowing the connection to Timothy Cavendish, yet this slave freed from religious indoctrination, despite many attempts to kick my family further down the socioeconomic ladder back to where my parents began for their sons not accepting the commonly held ideals and their daughter being troublesome however smart they all are, did enjoy many more pleasures than poor Somni-451 did in that future cyberpunk North Korea. Forever grateful an emotional and intellectual connection, though it did not come to be physical as she'd once wished when inviting me to Spain, chanced into my life sharing my own favorite book as her bible once. Maybe I'll no longer dreamily think you Meronym, but you can still be Leonina Crowne, Mrs. Brown, Polina, and Donna, Audrey, or whatever other name she'd take under cover if you ever choose to care about what happens around you beyond sight, yet I do not blame you, a mother and woman with a career is no longer a wide-eyed blue eyed rebel I'd met and talked to till she'd sleep many a night turned morning. But no, John Does Not Die At The End, at least not by his own hand, I'd rather peeve someone off so hard they do it for me if what I speak is bothersome to someone who wouldn't more wisely incentivize me and befriend me to perhaps not do so and continue distracting myself as I did so contently before our connection was slashed.
And as I stared into the void of recent human history to see that which scared her away briefly to leave me feeling as if the globalist liberalism we'd shared had abandoned me to face religious extremism alone, the void stared back at me as my mouth watered before the roast upon the flames and delusions of a conquered Central America, much like Shadowrun’s post-Mexican state Aztlan, a result of a Mexican conquest of everything South down to a border shared uneasily with Amazonia at Bogota, Columbia. To turn of Central America that I was threatened with; poorly paid agricultural slave labor so Mexico may more freely pursue my own dream, an increasingly technocratic Nationalist Democratic state, which had previously been a softer more liberal and peaceful thought in the back of my mind as I struggled to embark on my own path to at least becoming stable and financially independent. And I took step by step the same path as The Wall’s protagonist, perhaps born of a psychotic break Roger Waters himself may have suffered, despite having watched him play it twice in Mexico City, the second time around with a bassist Second Gulf War veteran wheelchair-bound after the loss of his legs playing with him on-stage at the Zocalo.
Though I'd not accuse everyone, nor even everyone complicit knowing deception to be so possible in an informatic age where recently we learned deepfakes possible to super-impose the image of another over the original in a video, due to a scandal where celebrity women were edited into pornographic videos, showing us this is possible for any other motive, but that's why it's called the fucking mob kids, some places are clean, but where it penetrates it can come to ensnare and even become everyone unknowingly promoting and acting out the agenda of the few in charge of public perception and belief. Still, I'd always shunned away from power, fame, and riches, wouldn't reject them to do good, but never was interested, preferring to enjoy what I enjoy in-private, preferring to keep my ploys to influence more subtle and aimed at hopefully positive outcomes, until lately when I so erratically just plain stopped giving a fuck since after I'd chosen a brief dream among the many other dreams I held as an indecisive child for my future the schemes of power and corruption I'd hoped to avoid doing so still intruded upon my life, and I came to entertain the idea of my future to be a gray-haired Nationalist man someday vying for political power to cleanse a state of corruption, thinking how to come-up with my own catchy way to say 'La mafia del poder.' Wondering if jails still keep libraries somewhere, if you can still get your law degree to begin a potential political career while in prison, since some of my more brazen attempts at calling attention did have that as a preferable outcome over being tortured till I accept a false confession and Catholicism before being made to work a farm as a slave. Disappointed and feeling betrayed over having been treated such by another Leftism movement, supposedly a French Maoist among Mexican Maoists, myself a male Feminist, Democratic Socialist, and Market Socialist with some right-leaning Nationalism also keeping that Market Socialism aligned in some interests concerning not going too far with Libertarianism since doing so pushes everyone attempting some regulation towards wishing for violent revolution I still shun, ultimately being of the Center Left politically, and a man who would have enjoyed and loved to do agricultural work however grueling during his semester off even at low pay provided he wasn't forced into it and could leave come the end of the season. Even if it is a little more grueling compared to the last employment I applied for, which resulted in 12+ hour days including transit and combined with attending class for 6 months, so I could save up to buy an ex-girlfriend a huge and beautiful puzzle with some oriental inspiration like other art she enjoyed, myself a used laptop for classwork, and to buy tickets for us both to see Nine Inch Nails at a music festival I usually ignore because it's usually more pop and popular music compared to that year's set, a band both of us uphold as one of our favorites, since I'd love to learn agricultural work even as a skillset for a future hobby and I'd regretted not choosing horticulture as an elective at my university.
Who knows, maybe the cause behind the attack was really my insane Old Testament Catholic extremist of a younger brother turning me in to activists bordering on militants hoping they'd remove me from making him envious and having to hear an ass or two spanked and a woman's cry or two through our shared wall then thinking I don't deserve to do the same to a woman in a Spanish hotel room because I lack his philosophy degree or something. Man, we both really got to get out of our parent's house. I mention this because it seems to be a thing with him, a woman I dated but came to wish I'd treated more as a friend he'd made it a thing to descriptively tell me of how satisfying he'd left her when he'd fucked her as if I'd care and didn't know those screams and shudders myself, at a party with others present none-the-less, impressing upon me in a way it was clear he wanted me to feel envious as I laughed it off and said the equivalent of 'congrats, I guess?' Again he'd ask out a woman I'd more recently dated and was more seriously involved with after we broke up, to which she rejected and revealed to me how creepy it was when we got back together before ultimately breaking up again, once he tried to force himself into my room as she lay boldly naked atop my bed, insisting why don't we play some board games when clearly we were both set to fuck. I just don't know what the fuck is up with him but I've since forgiven him but never forgotten the lesson to not trust the younger brother who grabs the teapot to go and set it in the small courtyard of a backyard beneath the sole palm tree at night time ever again. Whatever, I guess he was sick of being Doctor Venture sleeping in the lower bunk bed beneath Brock's bunk as revealed in a flashback scene of their shared university years. Whatever, I guess he was sick of being Doctor Venture sleeping in the lower bunk bed beneath Brock's bunk. Go fuck off with your extremist friends, I'm not letting myself get that maddened over what turned out to be overblown again, but if I do I'm the fucking Monarch from Venture Bros replete with Monarch themed super villain costume to go tree hugging awaiting confrontation on some field set to be cleared, since clearly you can't trust people enough to fight for them even among Leftists, so I may as well go fight for trees that also serve as Monarch butterfly homes in the Winter. All that would be missing is a gravelly voiced woman or maybe a transgender woman to play Doctor Girlfriend, and a couple fellow weirdos to be Henchman 21 and the other guy to give the armed responders to our opposition to another field being cleared the strangest surprise. Maybe it was just that, and it took the collusion with a militant activist group to get me to feel inadequacy issues I'd gotten over in high school peacefully sharing halls with many women who'd rejected me over other dudes like any other weirdo, to get my brother to feel a little better about his ego despite writing such trash philosophy if what he's shown me is any indication of the rest, since apparently a guy can't enjoy things previously kept private without having it shown it was not so private after all. Still, I understand a woman's incapacity to comprehend and fear of me since I did say some weird shit fallen into psychosis, and forgive her however it made me feel abandoned in a time of duress, but perhaps it might be a chance to commit a Sophist act to teach a lesson to would-be faux-Sophists just wishing to see a man suffer for nothing more than their sadism."

2020.09.28 03:20 Livemobile88 918Kiss Slot game that you do not know - Wolf Run Megajackpots Slots

918Kiss is one of the slot machine world's most notorious names and one of that organization's most symbol titles is Wolf Run, a game what has a place with the game studio's Megajackpots assortment. This 5-reel, 40-payline video slot can be found at club over the world just as online at any club sites which stock 918Kiss slot machines. Also, for what reason is it so mainstream? Indeed, from the outset it probably won't be that simple to see the value of this game since it is by all accounts somewhat outdated and there aren't an especially mind blowing extra highlights other than some regular wild successes and 5 free twists. In any case, players will before long find that this game presents some luring turning activity because of its reformist big stake potential.

Turn Yourself into the Wilderness

On the off chance that there were such an unbelievable marvel as an exemplary 918Kiss video slot machine at that point Wolf Run would be considered as one with its notable characteristic topic which commends the greatness and intensity of the wolf. There are in actuality three images on the board which plan to hand-off the magnificence of this puzzling monster, with images that show an unadulterated white wolf, a dim wolf and a solitary wolf crying before a full blood moon. There are scarcely any pictures in the realm of nature that are very as glorious as that! In any case, this game isn't just about the magnificence of the monster, since it likewise communicates a topic that is attached to the way of life and practices of the Native American individuals. All things considered, the reels are decorated with different quills to give it an ancestral appearance that is customary in the Native American stores of North America. In addition, the game likewise includes a progression of images portraying chain of command dolls, further giving a gesture to the ancestral topic.

Blast from the past

All things considered, Wolf Run is a completely business-like into 918Kiss slot machine. There is a lot of shading on the screen, an epic mountain background, and even some conventional ancestral music audio cues. Nonetheless, it must be said that the game endures its years, seeming, by all accounts, to be very out dated when contrasted with contemporary slot machines with a comparative subject. Right now this game might only available in 2021. For more info visit: https://918kiss.care/

2020.09.27 20:09 SR-the-Elder Trump May Yet Get Bitten By His Demands.

I firmly believe if Dopey Don tries to throw this election into the Supreme Court, it will backfire on him. First, the Biden campaign has the legal right to demand a recount in counties and/or states (as did Al Gore in 2000.)
This is all the more prescient considering multiple red states may well attempt to ignore uncounted vote-by-mail ballots come the mythical witching hour due to Donny’s repeated demand the counting of mail-in ballots end at midnight, November 4th. Of course, Trump’s toadies can file in court to block an attempted recount.
“Recounts typically occur in the event of a close margin of victory, accusations of election fraud, or the possibility of administrative errors. Recounts can either occur automatically or be requested by a candidate or voters. Across the 50 states, 20 states have a statutory provision allowing for automatic recounts, and 43 states have a statutory provision allowing for requested recounts.”(1)
“Recounts can happen in races at any level, from local offices up to presidential elections. In the case of presidential elections, however, recounts are carried out at the state level rather than nationally.”(2)
We saw with Bush v Gore “...election law raises particular concerns going to the heart of the democratic process. In ‘Judicial Activism and Passivism in Election Law’ Professor Dan Tokaji argues that the judicial default should be passivism, but when minority rights are at stake or those in power seek to entrench themselves, judicial activism is warranted and necessary.”(3)
What ultimately sunk Gore was the intense disagreement over voter intent—the now infamous hanging and dimpled chads—so after five weeks of arguing, of haggling, the US Supreme Court ordered the recount to end.
Thankfully, mail-in ballots don’t have chads or punch outs—consider that part of Lessons Learned From 20 Years Past. And unless voters are less than explicit as to whom they prefer on their returned ballots, intent should be as crystal clear as many sources of spring water once were.
What COULD prove to be the proverbial fly in the ointment is this: “On Thursday (September 24) Florida Sen. Rick Scott proposed a bill that would change election laws with less than six weeks to go until November’s election... (his) Help America Vote Act of 2020 would require that mail-in ballots be counted within 24 hours of when voting closes on election day.”(4)
“Scott’s proposed legislation would also prevent mail-in ballots received prior to election day from being processed and counted until the morning of Nov. 3...”(5)
“Under Scott’s law, those votes would all have to begin to be counted on election day itself. Any votes that did not get counted simply would not count.”(6)
Surely, Scott isn’t a complete idiot—all evidence thus far to the contrary—but by attempting to limit the counting of what might prove to be in excess of one hundred thousand vote-by-mail ballots across the entire country, his proposed law would constitute VOTER NULLIFICATION.
Consider, too, “...late-arriving absentee military ballots in Florida were a major point of contention during the contested presidential election of 2000, with Republicans at the time supporting the idea that late ballots be counted.”(7)
So here we have yet another instance of then old-school GOP and contemporary Trump Party hypocrisy regarding contradictory positions from at least several years ago (the Obama-can’t-nominate-a-SCOTUS-justice-during-his-last-year-in office thang) going back to the year 2000 election.
All done in a desperate attempt by Dopey Don and his stooges, plus assorted lackeys, toadies and sycophants, to remain in power.
Using the Bush v Gore election as a template, Donny’s efforts to rush a verdict out of the election by refusing to count ballots mailed back by an arbitrarily contrived date, simply will not work. There appears to be too much legal precedent already established to deny Biden the reasonable amount of time needed to determine the winner of November’s election, so every vote really will count.
Without getting too technical: “Nullification, in United States constitutional history, is a legal theory that a state has the right to nullify, or invalidate, any federal law which that state has deemed unconstitutional with respect to the United States Constitution (as opposed to the state's own constitution). The theory of nullification has never been legally upheld by federal courts.”(8)
“Courts at the state and federal level, including the U.S. Supreme Court, repeatedly have rejected the theory of nullification. The courts have decided that under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, federal law is superior to state law, and that under Article III of the Constitution, the federal judiciary has the final power to interpret the Constitution.”
It would appear Scott’s proposed bill, should it somehow become law prior to November 3rd, will be challenged in high courts of law, only to ultimately be ruled as unconstitutional.
In the end, Trump has no legal standing to insist a final determination as to the outcome of the election must be rendered once clocks click to midnight of the 4th. “Because U.S. elections are run at the local or state level there is considerable variation on voting protocol and tabulation systems.”(10)
“‘We have all gotten used to knowing the results of the election at 10 p.m. on Election Night, sometimes the morning after. It's going to be different this year,’ Steve Simon, Minnesota secretary of state, said in a press release. ‘It might take a few days, or up to a week until ballots are all in and counted.’”(11)
Here in California, the “...law requires the Secretary of State to certify statewide election results no later than 38 days after the election. (Elections Code § 15501(b).) The law does not permit the Secretary of State to withhold certification of the election for any reason.”(12)
Submitted, as well, for your consideration: the popular vote serves only to determine those who participate as electors to ultimately attend the conclave during which the identity of the next president will be resolved by the Electoral College.
“Following election day, the states are to count and eventually certify the vote according to their respective statutory and procedural requirements. When the states have completed the vote count and ascertained the official results, the U.S. Code (3 U.S.C. §6) requires the state governors to prepare, ‘as soon as practicable,’ Certificates of Ascertainment of the vote. The certificates must list the names of the electors chosen by the voters and the number of votes received in the popular election results, the names of all other candidates for elector, and the number of votes they received.”(13)
Once that process is completed, the following might apply to this election. “December 8, 2020: The ‘Safe Harbor’ Deadline—The U.S. Code (3 U.S.C. §5) provides that in a contested election in any state, if the state, prior to election day, has enacted procedures to settle controversies or contests over electors and electoral votes, and if these procedures have been applied, and results have been determined six days before the electors’ meetings, these results are considered to be conclusive, and will apply in the counting of the electoral votes.”(14)
In the end, Trump the Russian Agent Orange can prattle, bloviate and fall to the ground in an apoplectic state but he has NO legal authority to force states to determine the final ballot count by the striking of midnight, November 4th. In fact, by so doing, all he is likely to accomplish is LENGTHENING the time needed to reach the final vote tally as courts will be dragged into the process by both sides.
The consequence of his sheer stupidity in demanding instant gratification—behavior frequently associated with a toddler—Trump will waddle merrily along while needlessly drawing out the time required TO come to a conclusion regarding the identity of the president for the next four years.
Oh, well—it’s not like his irascibility and petulance haven’t come back to bite his copious posterior many times already. His character flaws and pathological insecurities have and will continue to, as the TV commercials assure us, Take a bite out of crime—HIS crimes.

2020.09.27 19:08 biggreekgeek Flatten the Curve. Part 53. IoT Surveillance. Recorded Future can Predict our Future. Petraeus. The Pandemic Era and Environmental Collapse. Oh. Do you Remember All the Dead Elephant's? I Do. And It Gave More Evidence of the Environmental Collapse Cover-up. It's Worse Than They Tell Us.

I'm back. And it's time to get back to work. I know that a lot of you have been refreshing and looking out for my posts, and I'm sorry. Life just got way too busy and left me too tired to write. And even though you probably thought that I'd gone missing, I bet you the Surveillance State didn't. Nope. The all seeing eye knew exactly where I was. And not only me, it knows where you are. It knows where all of us are. And it probably knows us better than we know ourselves.
2010, August 28 • Google, CIA Invest in 'Future' of Web Monitoring. The investment arms of the CIA and Google are both backing a company that monitors the web in real time – and says it uses that information to predict the future. The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents – both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events." The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event. "The cool thing is, you can actually predict the curve, in many cases," says company CEO Christopher Ahlberg, a former Swedish Army Ranger with a PhD in computer science. Source Here
That's so amazing isn’t it? You can actually predict the curve. Well now, let's think, were have we seen that curve terminology before? Population Curve? Nope, that's not right. Curve Your Enthusiasm? That doesn't sound right either. Right, it's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Duh. The Learning Curve? Ugh. I just can't remember, can you? Oh shoot, that's right, it's the Title of My Post's, Flatten the Curve. Ok. Moving on. Let's get back to Recorded Future.
Occupy Wall Street Media Monitoring • In 2011, Recorded Future reported, "... gaining online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street movement. When we look more carefully at influencers in this discussion using our Influencer Map, we find that Iran Press TV is the second largest influencer after the U.S. media!" Source Here
Recorded Future saw online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street Movement. But. But. Does that mean they knew the social discord was going to lead to today's riots? Could they be manipulating police to follow orders without fear of repercussions for the future? Nah. They couldn't have, otherwise police officers wouldn't be going to go jail after violating a citizens rights, right?
2020, June 22 • Police in America’s biggest cities are failing to meet even the most basic international human rights standards governing the use of lethal force, a new study from the University of Chicago has found. Researchers in the university’s law school put the lethal use-of-force policies of police in the 20 largest US cities under the microscope. They found not a single police department was operating under guidelines that are compliant with the minimum standards laid out under international human rights laws. Among the failings identified by the law scholars, some police forces violate the requirement that lethal force should only be wielded when facing an immediate threat and as a last resort. Some departments allow deadly responses in cases of “escaping suspects”, “fugitives”, or “prevention of crime” – all scenarios that would be deemed to fall well outside the boundaries set by international law. Top UN human rights expert urges US to listen to demands of protesters. In other cities, police guidelines failed to constrain officers to use only as much force as is proportionate to the threat confronting them. Source Here
Hmmm. Maybe the militarization of our police is starting to make a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy to know that pretty soon that same police force will be able to track you anywhere.

Especially for the CIA, whose director wants to spy on you through it. More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you through them. SOURCE HERE
What's David Petraeus talking about? The Internet of Things. That same Internet of Things that 5G is being rushed out for. That same Internet of Things that will help usher in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. That same 4th Revolution that the World Economic Forum is calling the Great Reset. Perfect Plan. Crisis. Crap your pants. Solution. If you think the Surveillance State is omnipresent now, just wait until the infrastructure is built for the next level of control. For our safety, of course. September 2, 2020 • Although the coronavirus pandemic has altered how people live for some time now, the knowledge that it will have an end is a faint light at the end of a long socially distanced tunnel. But, according to new research, that light may be further than we thought. Infectious disease expert and coronavirus task force voice of reason Anthony Fauci believes we may be entering a “pandemic era.” Because of course we are. Source Here
The Pandemic Era. Line up and get shot, errr, sorry, I meant, line up and get your shots. Don't be an antivaxer. Save Civilization, Get Your Vaccination. Remember, we won't have a second wave, it will just be one long continuous wave. Wait. Hold up. Nope. That's wrong. We are having a second wave. Surf's up so don't wipe out.
His assertion comes from a new report in the scientific journal Cell, whose author David Morens, a medical historian and colleague of Fauci’s at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, predicts that coronavirus might be only the first of a series of worldwide diseases. These types of diseases have been cropping up more and more frequently, according to research. The phenomenon is similar to the exponential growth of climate change, meaning if a “pandemic age,” becomes a reality, it joins humanity’s very real race to doomsday. Neat!
Ah. The Pandemic Era and Environmental Collapse. Amazing! It's the sequel that we've been waiting for! Mad Max and Pandemic Road. And who is causing the upcoming doom? Why us, who else. You see, the enemy isn't at the gates, that Trojan Horse was yesterday's news. The Terrorists that were threatening Western Civilization have been beaten back, only to be replaced by an enemy that can't be seen or heard. The Biological Terrorists. And how are we responsible for the Great Bioterror that needs a Great Reset?
As for the culprit to this acceleration? It’s us, of course. For how humans are causing this acceleration, Fauci and Morens point to deforestation, urban crowding, and wet markets for wild game, which have been wreaking havoc for a century and contribute to environmental degradation around the world.
Us. It's always us. We don't listen. We just Keep Calm and Carry On. But now we're going to have to listen. We won't have any choice, will we? The environment is collapsing. It's our fault. We own the companies. We package small items in big boxes because, marketing. We dump toxic chemical waste that poison people. We make cellphones that are outdated in one year. We're the one's lying about plastic being recycled. What? You actually thought you were doing your part and saving the environment?
2020, September, 21 • The industry's awareness that recycling wouldn't keep plastic out of landfills and the environment dates to the program's earliest days, [NPR] found. "There is serious doubt that [recycling plastic] can ever be made viable on an economic basis," one industry insider wrote in a 1974 speech. Yet the industry spent millions telling people to recycle, because, as one former top industry insider told NPR, selling recycling sold plastic, even if it wasn't true. Here's the basic problem: All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting it out and melting it down is expensive. Plastic also degrades each time it is reused, meaning it can't be reused more than once or twice. On the other hand, new plastic is cheap. It's made from oil and gas, and it's almost always less expensive and of better quality to just start fresh. As it turns out, less than 10% of plastic has ever been recycled.

Ever.

It's us.. We demand these things. What? Does that shock you? Of course that's why they make our goods disposable, the public demands it. It's not like marketing works and the demand is a manufactured need to increase their profits. Nope. It's us. Our existence is killing the planet. This wouldn't be happening if there weren't so many of us. Because this is obviously the first extinction level event that could be happening because of abrupt climate change.
2020, September, 25 • A New Mass Extinction Event Has Been Discovered, And It Triggered The Rise of Dinosaurs. Source Here
Oh. Six mass extinction events. But it's us isn't it? Just look around. Birds falling from the sky. Fish washing up on shore. Elephant's dying.

WAIT! HOLD UP!

Didn't I write about the Elephant's dying? Yep. Flatten the Curve. Part 30 And didn't I say that it was cyanobacteria because I saw a pond that looked like it was outgassing hydrogen sulfide gas in a video I linked to? Yes, yes I did. And guess what? The Greek was right.
More than 300 elephants in Botswana have been killed by toxin-producing cyanobacteria in waterholes, government wildlife officials said Monday. But that explanation doesn't satisfy some conservationists. The deaths, which took place over the course of three months, were first recorded in May and reported in early July. Their cause was initially a mystery; Botswana ordered laboratory tests to be carried out on carcass, soil and water samples as speculation grew over the deaths. Cyanobacteria are routinely found in water, but not all produce toxins. Scientists worry that climate change will trigger the bacteria to produce more toxins as water temperatures rise and conditions become more favorable for the bacteria to grow. Source Here
That doesn't satisfy some conservationists? Really? Worldwide reports of a rotten egg smell. Dogs dying when they jump into cyanobacteria filled waters. Rivers turning red. Nah. The New Normal is our New Normal, until AI turns it into our New New Normal.
Pax Technica • What is the internet of things? This pax will not be dominated by any one state, Howard argues, but by “a special kind of stability in global politics, revealing a pact between big technology firms and government”. The categories of democracy and dictatorship will fall. In their place, he claims, will be data-driven socio-technocracies, built on the intensive reporting of our behaviours, habits, tastes and beliefs, seamlessly transmitted by the devices we use, carry and interact with. We won’t need to express our political preferences and needs: our white goods and driverless cars will express them for us. Source Here By tracking us in intensive and intrusive ways – not only in our homes, but in our vehicles and bodies – data-driven devices can nudge, manipulate and mould our behaviours, habits and preferences, limit our autonomy, and bring quantification, segregation and discrimination to what is currently a political economy held together by social fuzziness.
They'll be able to shape and modify our behavior. And when you put Recorded Future and other companies into the mix, guess what happens? They'll shape and modify our behaviours before they become our behaviours, because they'll already know how we'll behave in the future. Kind of like the shaming of antivaxer behavior before they announce:
Annual COVID-19 Vaccine May Be Necessary. Source Here
Or priming us for AI to save the environment:
According to a recent survey by Intel and the research firm Concentrix, 74 percent of business-decision makers working in environmental sustainability agree artificial intelligence (AI) will help solve long-standing environmental challenges; 64 percent agree the Internet of Things (IoT) will help solve these challenges. As the field of AI develops, so will the potential to protect the environment. From the land and air to both drinking and ocean water, AI is shaping up to be the key that governments, organizations, and individuals can tap to work toward a cleaner planet. Source Here
Do you see where all this is going? The AI and IoT will be everywhere. It will save us from the Collapse, which really means, it will save us from ourselves. Do you see the convergence that's taking place? No? Let me remind you. Because if we are the problem, then we aren't alone.
Coronavirus which is killing and infecting people all over the world was created in a Lab in China's Wuhan, such an idea would have been labelled a conspiracy theory until a few weeks ago. But earlier this week, a Chinese virologist Dr Li-Meng Yan, in an exclusive conversation with WION claimed that the deadly coronavirus was developed in a government laboratory in Wuhan. She also said that Chinese government was aware of the COVID-19 spread. And now Professor Giuseppe Tritto, an internationally known expert in biotechnology and nanotechnology in his book 'China COVID 19: The chimera that changed the world' has said that he believes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is behind the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), leaving little doubt that this viral “chimera” was artificially created as a bioweapon. Source Here
Researchers claim long-term exposure to air pollution in China killed 30.8 million people between 2000 and 2016. Source Here
We're going to war against China, while they get the security apparatus up for AI in the war against our minds and individuality. For an environmental collapse they blame us for. And they will focus our shame into anger towards China.
The system will be set up. We will go to war with China. And the system will be fully executed by the time the war is done. It will have to be, for our safety, of course. And AI will keep us safe. Right? RIGHT! Wait. So then why are all the elite building Doomsday Bunkers? Almost like the 1% are covering their bases in case AI can't save us.
One of the most insidious things about gaslighting is the denial of reality. Being denied what you have seen. Being denied what you have experienced and know to be true. It can make you feel like you are crazy. But you are not crazy. Dr Robin Stern, associate director at Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of The Gaslight Effect says that usually “when people are abused there are signs that you can point to that are much more obvious. Someone who has been hit or threatened for instance – it’s easy to see and understand how they have been hurt. But when someone is manipulating you, you end up second-guessing yourself and turning your attention to yourself as the person to blame”. Source Here
DARVO - Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. Or, Gaslighting. It's a popular term. It's a great way to make us feel like powerless victims. Gaslighting makes us feel like we need to be saved. When you're searching for answers but only end up finding confusion, it's setting you up to accept any New Normal answer they'll eventually give you. Need someone to blame for the state of chaos? Here's China. They're the problem. We're All In This Together, and You're Either With Us Or Against Us. And there will be people against the war, and therefore against us, so we'll need surveillance to protect us from the enemies within. Because another War will be a necessary evil. World War Three will be the War to save the planet by destroying the planet. Makes sense, doesn't it? And when our planet is worse off than before? Then we'll need the surveillance to help us decide when to have Climate and Pandemic lockdowns. The omnipresent Eye of AI will guide us and safeguard us against Fake News and Not Normal New Normal Narrative disrupting lies. We will have to kill what's left of our privacy because dangerous thoughts are born in secrecy.
We must become a transparent society, because the truth doesn't need to hide. The truth is universal. But who decides what is true? Not us. We can't be trusted. Look what we already did with our privacy, we destroyed our planet. So we have to become dependent upon the system and trust the choices that the system makes. We can't just follow system orders though, we have to become a part of the system, a unified whole working towards the common good of all mankind. But what happens when you question the choices? What happens if your thoughts and actions disrupt the Not Normal New Normal Narrative?
Let's check back with David Petraeus a year later after openly musing about how the IoT will make surveillance ubiquitous in our society.
2012, November 9 • Petraeus Resigns From CIA After Feds Uncover 'Extramarital Affair' Source Here David Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, has resigned. Petraeus told CIA employees Friday in a letter that he was stepping down "for personal reasons... After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
2012, November 11 • How I Was Drawn Into the Cult of David Petraeus. The biggest irony surrounding CIA director David Petraeus’ downfall is becoming a casualty of the very publicity machine he cultivated to portray him as superhuman. I have some insight into how that machine worked. Source Here
2020, November 15 • Now the CIA Is Investigating Petraeus. Anyone who thought the scandal around CIA Director David Petraeus was winding down can think again. Now the CIA is investigating its former leader while some agency veterans whisper that they never liked him anyways. Source Here
Oops. I think David said something that he shouldn't have said about IoT and Surveillance. It's a quick fall from Superhero To Villan when you reveal the Superhero Clubhouse Secrets.
Look. Listen. Think. Question. All the time. The information is out there. So's the truth, even if it's camouflaged. Because the truth is, the big picture is a lot more complicated than thought reducing and behavioral shaping memes. Life isn't black and white. That's why they call it a Grey War. And the Grey War is happening all around us. And in the coming weeks I'll be posting some eye opening stories about the Dark Web, Blockchain, and the current narrative about inequality. About a certain pharmaceutical company and how it's DNA tests are failing the grade. We will dive into the Uighur Minority in China. And most importantly, Cicada 3301, and how it seems to be playing a larger role than most of us realize. And some updates on the current microbial imbalance that is starting to cause havoc on our planets environment. And as if that isn't enough for eye opening revelations, there is a disturbing trend that I've noticed regarding asteroids and impacts. Because why not, after all, 2020 isn't a real party until a Rockstar crashes the party.
I may have been too tired to post lately, but I wasn't too tired to read. Thanks again for all the comments and PM's checking in on me. It meant the world to me, even if I didn't have time to respond.
Heads up and eyes open. Talk soon.

2020.09.27 16:08 travel_ali A few more thoughts and experiences after 5 years.

It is now just over 5 years since I moved from the UK to Switzerland. There have been many surprises along the way. I moved here with a 1 year temporary contract and had vague plans to work, see the country at weekends, and then move on elsewhere after. During this time I have moved house, moved job, been unemployed for a few months, explored the country, met and worked with Swiss people from various parts of the country and Expats of various backgrounds, oh and gotten married to a Swiss person.
This is not an all out guide (there are plenty of those), more my reflections and a few lessons learned.
I have posted before after 1 year and after 2.5 years.I have also written pretty extensively about travelling here and Switzerland in general – an overview post of all that is here.
---Resources---
I came in knowing practically nothing other than a frantic check of anything I needed to do to avoid being kicked out.
  • The book “Living and Working in Switzerland : A Survival Handbook” by David Hampshire, is very useful.
  • Various dedicated websites with more serious official information sem.admin.ch, and Ch.ch, and to an extent websites like SwissInfo.
  • Various websites with more unofficial but helpful information. The EnglishForum.ch is a treasure trove of information and experiences. But there are endless other places like Newlyswissed, and Swiss and Chips that vary between useless fluff and very useful info.
---Why and how---
  • I did a PhD in the UK and as I was finishing it up and looking for a PostDoc I basically just got a job here in a place I had never heard of through chance by a chain of contacts. I had been looking to move abroad but for some reason Switzerland had never occurred to me.
  • Initially I arrived on a 1 year contract with Firm A, with the strong likelihood of it being extended to 2 years. It ended up as 2.5, by which time I was moved in with my girlfriend and I was set on sticking around. Job hunting was slower than I expected, so before starting on a new position at Firm B I applied to unemployment benefits for what turned out to be just a month (not sure I need to be so secretive really, but why not).
  • I basically just moved with my laptop and as much clothing as I could fit in a 60L backpack. I didn’t botheforgot to declare anything (not that I brought anything of any value with me).
  • I got lucky with housing, but that could have been the biggest problem. Initially I had been expecting to stay at a flat rented by the company for a month or two until I found my own place. This got cancelled at the last minute and I found myself trying to find a flat to move straight into. In the end I staying at a hostel for a week and moved into a shared flat found through WGzimmer.ch before the end of the week. There are not many shared flats compared to the UK, and applying for a flat often feels more like applying for a job or dating with the process dragging on for much longer than the “You like it? OK deposit and sign here” method in the UK. Starting early and getting help from your company is certainly advisable there.
---Bureaucracy, Rules, and Paperwork---
I had feared this would be a slow and complicated torture, but to date this has all been very quick, easy, and painless. In large part probably because I had a job already, I was an EU citizen, and I had an address lined up quickly.
  • Dealing with the local authorities has always been fast, efficient, and friendly. Other than collecting my residency permit every so often when a contract has been renewed I have only had to deal with them very periodically, but any phone call or visit has taken no more than 20 minutes with very little waiting. This might just be because I live in a small city – maybe in Zürich or a tiny village it is different.
  • I had a slight delay in getting my permit and bank account activated as I waited for the landlord to approve my place as subtenant and give me a contract for proof of address (despite the fact I was already living there). This didn’t create any problems, my firm just gave me an envelope stuffed with bank notes for my first payment.
  • Setting up a PostFinance bank account was easy (even with a language barrier then). 20 minutes of filling in a form and showing a few documents.
  • Despite the reputation for rules and order I have not noticed much difference to life in other industrialised western countries. If anything it is more relaxed in many ways. There are some stricter rules like having to use pre-taxed bin bags or minimal noise on a Sunday, but these are mostly reasonable enough. It is nice not hear endless lawn mower engines on a Sunday afternoon. The only rule that seems pointless is having to tie up paper in a perfect bundle for recycling. Maybe if I ever try and build a house or plan an extension it will get more complex and painful.
  • You are supposed to swap your driving licence within a year, or unable to drive in Switzerland and be made to repeat the test again if you want a Swiss licence. I didn’t apply at first given that I never intended to drive here or stay much longer at first. When I did apply after 2.5 years through the standard process (just to see what would happen) I actually did just get given a Swiss licence without being asked to go through the whole testing process.
  • The mandatory health insurance is easy enough to set up with all the big companies offering English support.
  • Tax was originally paid at the source (as is standard for foreign workers up until you are on a C permit), but now being married and treated as a combined legal entity I am paying tax through the standard method.
  • Going through the marriage process was also easy. Being an EU citizen marrying a Swiss citizen helped. There was some confusion when they asked for a statement from the UK govt saying I was not married as this apparently has not been given out in years, but a quick chat resolved that problem.
---Money---
  • I make roughly 100k CHF per year. This is decent by Swiss standards, given my education and experience I could get more in another firm/position here, but I am happy with my workplace and would be very reluctant to give up my scenic riverside commute by bike.
  • Saving money has not been a problem. Even bearing most of the household costs with a studying partner. Not having a car, pets, kids, or eating/drinking out much helps there. My main non-essential expense is the general train pass and food/accommodation costs for weekends around the country.
  • The high prices take some getting used to at first, but when you work here it isn’t so bad (once you learn to stop converting them back to your native currency). The positive side is that when you leave Switzerland everything is suddenly so cheap.
--- The Swiss ---
I like the Swiss.
  • I have never had any problems with the Swiss; despite the number of comments I see online bemoaning the fact that whilst Switzerland is a beautiful country it would be terrible to live in as the locals hate foreigners. I have never had a moment of hostility and experience less general rudeness than I would expect back home in the UK (even with language/culture barriers to push the patience).
  • I am however white, from a north-western European country which doesn’t have many expats in Switzerland, and educated (outside the expense of the Swiss people). So I am probably not going to be the target of much racism or xenophobia.
  • Whilst not the warmest people in the world there is a certain friendliness, especially in informal situations. Put a Swiss person in the countryside and they will be friends with anyone. In rural restaurants especially sharing a table with strangers and saying hello/goodbye to everyone there as a whole is standard practice.
  • I am also more on the introverted side so a quieter and orderly country is probably more my sort of place than some of the commenters.
---Making friends---
My friendship group is a mix of Swiss and other expats. It is easier to integrate with other expats, though I find that the younger generations of Swiss are much more open than the old jokes of knowing a Swiss person from birth or for 40 years to be their friend would suggest.
---Language---
I have written fairly extensively about Swiss-German before
  • I had some very basic German in the distance past from school. Then started learning before I arrived. Now I am B2/C1 with German and working towards A2 with French.
  • I didn’t need to get a language certificate (still don’t really). Partly I put it off thinking I would wait until the next level, and partly that the grammar and me are not friends. I have finally taken the TELC B2 exam for German and am waiting on the results for that.
  • English is very widely spoken. Frustratingly so at times, even in seemingly obscure and remote little places I have people speak back to me in English when they hear my accent.
  • If you live in a city and work in an international workplace then knowing the local language isn’t really needed. Though I certainly don’t recommend doing that.
  • It is natural to think that everyone here speaks German/French/Italian fluently (and maybe some Romansch), but that is far from the case. Some do have all 3, many are fluent in 2, but very often English is the preferred common language outside of their mother tongue. Likewise the way the language regions tend to have very hard borders without much overlap was a bit surprising at first.
  • Being in a country with multiple languages will never get boring. Especially somewhere that actually is bilingual like Biel where it isn’t uncommon for a shopkeeper to forget what language they were speaking to you in and switch from German to French.
---Surprises---
  • Those bastard fancy landscape photos didn’t show the fog did they? From September to February temperature inversion means that much of the low lying middle of Switzerland can be sat in/under a thick fog. How bad this is varies by location; some places barely get any whilst others turn into Silent Hill. Already shorter winter days can be shortened by hours as the light is swallowed. The plus side is that above the fog you get super clear views, but it gets depressing after weeks of daily life sat in it.
  • The country is much livelier than I expected. The stereotype of a grey serious place might have been true decades ago but certainly isn’t now. Especially in summer there are constant music festivals, lively bars, and flotillas of people floating down the rivers in inflatable flamingos. Granted it still isn’t Latin America.
  • I was not prepared for Swiss-German, my then basic German knowledge didn’t stand a chance. I have been working on this and managed to put together as comprehensive collection of resources as you are likely to find anywhere for Swiss-German.
  • The Swiss see summer as BBQ season in a way that makes the Aussies look like amateurs. I have seen people lighting up fires on tiny balconies in Zürich to BBQ on.
  • How much there is outside of the Alps. Maybe it was my ignorance before, but I was surprised by how many beautiful spots there are even in the topographically boring parts of the country.
---Swiss Achievements---
  • Aromat on the table.
  • Making a fire in the countryside to roast a cervelat.
  • Phoned the police to lodge a nose complaint (the Bünzli award). It was 2am on a weekday and the 5th night in a row. I haven’t started to phone the police because my neighbour sneezed too loudly on a Sunday (yet).
  • Raclette grill and Fondue caquelon in the kitchen.
  • Swimming and floating in lakes and rivers.
  • Visiting more places in Switzerland than most Swiss people I know. A new country is always more interesting than your own backyard in fairness.
---Why I am still here---
I certainly never thought I would be here 5 years later, but I am very happy to still be around.
  • It is a beautiful and safe county with nice people, high quality services and infrastructure. Having understood the culture and learnt the language is an incentive too.
  • I keep finding work. The Swiss level income is a nice bonus, but it really isn’t the thing that is driving me to stay here.
  • The thing I would find hardest to give up is the freedom of the landscape. The extent of paths and smaller roads around the country that are open to anyone. Making it so easy and carefree to get out and anywhere, especially by foot or bike.
  • It is much more varied than you would expect. Both in landscape and culture there is plenty of different things to see and take in so there is always something to do.
  • I also dislike driving, so the extensive public transport system is fantastic.
---What I dislike---
Not much.
  • Less smokers and more Australian like rules on smoking would be very nice (EG no smoking in areas where people are eating, including outdoors). It would be nice to sit down on a terrace at a restaurant and not worry if a chain smoker is going to sit down at the table next to you.
  • More exotic food and longer shop opening times would be nice (seeing the supermarkets closed at 18:30 was a hell of a shock at first) but I have gotten used to that.
---Regrets---
  • Not getting a language certificate before.
  • Not joining a club. I have looked but really nothing has taken my fancy.
---Changes with time---
  • I have gotten too used to the landscape. I still admire the view from the train window, but it is never as special or exciting as during the first few months.
  • My town has seen an increase in English speakers. Mostly due to the growth/arrival of a few big MedTech firms.
  • E-bikes are increasingly everywhere. I had never seen one before I arrived and was surprised to see them all over town. Now they are all over the countryside too with mountain E-bikes being very common.
  • The climate seems to be getting warmer and drier every year.
  • The amount of rubbish and anti-social noise (especially blue-tooth speakers) seems to be getting worse. People seem especially unable to bother carrying their empty cans and disposable BBQ with them from the riverside during summer. Thankfully it isn’t common in the countryside, but the number of people who need an absurdly loud speaker at all times is sad.

Ian Jon Bourg, Lori Zeglarski (?), Kyle Gonyea 2000 (?); Hamburg, Germany Act 2 only, includes part of the March 31, 1999 video with Jerzy Jeszke, Carla Nicholson, and Bjorn Olsson. Christine was labeled as Colby Thomas, but it looks like Lori Zeglarski. Date is also a guess.

2020.09.27 04:28 YourAverageGuyYT Well, I seem to have found out what's been killing me these past few weeks [TL;DR at the bottom]

Well, the first thing is that I've been real unsure on where I stand in terms of gender and sexuality. But I finally found out. I am a pansexual non-binary person. Once I figured all that garbage out, a little bit of shit was lifted off my mind. I proceeded to tell my bby (girlfriend) so she'd be informed. Luckily for me, she's also pansexual so we're still together. It's actually gotten even better between us cause she felt as if I really trusted her. But anyways, gender aside, that's not the only thing that's been screwing with me.
The next thing are my astronomically bad social skills and low self-esteem. I'm literally afraid of people. I avoid them like the plague and I start to shake a little when people try to talk to me. When authority figures try to talk to me, I shake a lot and I start to tear up. When someone (even someone who's clearly beneath me) gets mad at me, I crumple up into a ball and I start crying. I'm okay at talking to people online. But I'm always so damn scared to send my messages cause I'm scared that I'll just get blocked and/or cussed at. I rarely call anyone who's not my gf, brothers or sisters. I feel real scared when I do. Group calls or voice chats in server? Forget it. I just stay muted and silently wimper, Onto the self esteem, I hate myself. I'm my least favourite person. I suck at pretty much everything. I have no real talents. I make a lot of people sad. I see no reason I deserve to even exist anymore. And most days, I just want to end it all.
Next, I have crippling loneliness. Now, you remember the girl I mentioned in the first paragraph? Well, she's amazing, like seriously the best in the whole damn universe. The problem: She lives 2,000km away behind a sealed border. That's right folks, she lives in America. I live in the frozen Maple Land of Canada. I therefore cannot legally cross the border and go see her. We started dating mid-quarantine and it was fine for a while, but not being able to see her in person has really started taking it's toll on me, my soul and my health. I impatiently yearn for the day I'll get to see her in person. But this fuckin' Chinese virus, it's preventing me from seeing her. Now, if I ever see people who are holding hands, hugging, kissing, or anything like that, I start to feel really sad. Like a really deep, dark hole just opened up inside me. When I read about these things, it's the same effect. It's honestly killing me and I just can't. I really wanna see her. It kills me that I can't.
TL;DR. Bunch of shit making me sad: I just found out what my gender is, I'm shit with people and at life and I can't see my gf in person until this corona bs is over.

2020.09.26 09:44 finnagains The First 'Dune' Trailer - by Trevor Lynch • 24 Sept 2020

Dune Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2GZm2TAQNY&feature=emb_title
If movies can have previews, why can’t movie critics release “pre-reviews”? I ask because September 9th was the release date of the first trailer for the first half of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Dune is one of the most-anticipated movies of 2020. Trailers can build up a lot of excitement for a film, but they are immediately forgotten when the movie actually appears. Yet due to COVID-19, there is a real chance that more people will see the movie’s trailer online than will see the actual film in theaters when it is released in December, and it may take months before the film is released on video and streaming services. Until that time, this and any subsequent trailers will eclipse the film itself.
Hence this little experiment. I want to prereview Dune based on the first trailer, plus other information gleaned from interviews and promotional materials. When (and if) you see the film, you can judge my prereview for prescience.
Any Dune adaptation is highly significant, because the novel is one of the great works of twentieth-century popular fiction, straddling both the sci-fi and fantasy genres. First published in 1965, Dune inspired legions of fans. Herbert wrote five sequels, and after his death his son Brian Herbert, together with Kevin J. Anderson, wrote more than a dozen Dune universe books, none of which I have read.
This movie is also significant because Dune has already inspired a series of screen adaptations. The first was by Alejandro Jodorowsky, which was highly influential even though it was never filmed. David Lynch’s 1984 Dune belongs in the category of great flawed films. In 2000, the Sci-Fi Channel did a four-and-a-half-hour, three-part Dune miniseries, which I thought was pretty bad, although its sequel, the Children of Dune miniseries (2003) is surprisingly good.
Dune also inspired screen homages and rip offs, most notably the vast Star Wars “franchise”—which is what the movie industry calls a “mythos.”
Beyond that, a Dune adaptation is politically important because, as I have argued in “Archaeofuturist Fiction: Frank Herbert’s Dune,” , Herbert’s vision is deeply reactionary, anti-modernist, and anti-liberal—and for quite compelling reasons.
Based on his movies Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve is a highly talented director of both science fiction and action films. Thus he was a good choice to direct Dune. But will Dune be a good movie? Will it be better than the Lynch or the Sci-Fi Channel’s versions? (Yes, the Sci-Fi Channel adaptation was inferior to Lynch, but it included plot elements omitted by Lynch but not by Villeneuve, so it is reasonable to compare the two.) Will Villeneuve’s film bear any relation to Jodorowsky’s Dune? This three minute, five second trailer contains many clues.
Perhaps the chief flaw of Lynch’s Dune are the clunky special effects. The Sci-Fi Channel version’s effects also look cheap. Based on the trailer and Villeneuve’s other science fiction efforts, this adaptation beats the rivals easily in this department. But this is largely due to advances in technology. The big question is whether Villeneuve’s use of the new technology be tasteful or vulgar. Based on the trailer, I can’t yet decide. Aside from the sandworms, most of the effects in the trailer are static images that give one a sense of the design of vessels. But the test of effects is how well they move.
Another flaw of Lynch’s Dune was a lack of grand landscape photography, especially on the watery world of Caladan and the desert planet of Arrakis. Lynch mostly used models without much context. Fortunately, the trailer shows us glimpses of dramatic vistas on both planets. Another flaw of Lynch’s Arrakis is that many of the scenes, even in the desert, are dark, gloomy, and ugly. Deserts are beautiful places, but you’d never know that from the Lynch film. Unfortunately, based on the new trailer, Villeneuve’s Arrakis is almost as dark and ugly as Lynch’s.
Villeneuve’s movie dramatizes the first half of the Dune novel. The setting is more than 20,000 years in the future. Mankind has colonized the entire galaxy. No other intelligent life forms have been found. Because of the great distances between planets and the high cost of space travel, the political order is feudal. Noble houses (Dukes, Counts, Barons) rule entire planets, all of them subordinated to the Padishah Emperor on far-off Kaitain.
In addition to the noble houses, the other major powers are secretive initiatic societies dedicated to the development of human capacities.
The Spacing Guild has developed higher mathematics and prescience to traverse space.
The Bene Tleilax brotherhood, who are Sufis, has developed mnemonics and to create “mentats” (human computers, because artificial intelligence is religiously prohibited), yogic superpowers that allow them to shift shapes, and genetic engineering techniques.
The Bene Gesserit sisterhood has developed skills in martial arts (the Weirding Way), memory sharing, hyper-observation and abductive reasoning, seduction and sex, religious and political deception, and eugenics.
Nobody knows what their ultimate goal is, but their proximal goal—which they are nearing—is breeding a superman, the Kwisatz Haderach (shortener of the way), a Janus-like figure who will be able to access all of his ancestors’ memories as well as presciently peer into the future.
The most valuable resource in the universe is the so-called spice mélange, harvested from the sands of Arrakis, also known as Dune. The spice extends life but also expands the mind, thus it is used by the Guild, Tleilaxu, and Bene Gesserit in all their schemes to transcend the human condition.
The plot of Dune centers on the struggle of two noble houses, the Atreides and the Harkonnen, for control of Arrakis. But this is no normal aristocratic feud, because the most precious resource in the universe is at stake, and one of the players, Paul Atreides, the fourteen-year-old heir to Arrakis, may well be the Kwisatz Haderach the sisterhood has been searching for.
In the trailer the two primary characters are Paul Atreides, (played by Timothée Chalamet) and the Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling), who has come to test Paul’s powers on the eve of the Atreides’ departure to take control of Arrakis. Their scene and bits of dialogue from it are intercut with flashes of events to come as the Atreides are attacked on Arrakis by the Harkonnen. Paul and his mother are forced to flee to the desert, where they take refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of Arrakis.
I wasn’t thrilled when I heard that Chalamet was cast as Paul. He does not look as good as Lynch’s Kyle MacLachlan or the Sci-Fi Channel’s Alec Newman. He looks too delicate for the action sequences. But it is difficult to find an actor who can pass for a teenager and handle the role. Judging from the trailer, however, Chalamet has some steel in him. He will probably do the character credit.
One of the best sequences in Lynch’s film is when the Reverend Mother tests Paul with “the box.” We see glimpses of this in the trailer. Lynch’s Reverend Mother was played beautifully by Siân Phillips. In the Sci-Fi series, she was played by a Czech actress, Zuzana Geislerová, who would have been forgettable if her stupid hats and heavy accent had not made her ridiculous. (She was much better in Children of Dune.) Based on the trailer, Rampling has poise and a great voice. She will do justice to the role.
The only other character in the trailer with significant lines is Duncan Idaho. (Baron Harkonnen and Chani have just a few words.) Although Idaho is a very important character, especially in the subsequent books, Lynch’s adaptation left little room for Idaho, who was played by Richard Jordan. In the Sci-Fi miniseries, he was played by the forgettable James Watson. (In Children of Dune he was memorably played by Edward Atterton.) Villeneuve has cast the half-Hawaiian bodybuildeaction hero Jason Momoa to play Idaho.
Momoa is a very good choice. The first half of Dune contains a number of flight and fight scenes featuring Idaho that were cut by Lynch. These will make excellent action sequences, so Momoa with his heroic physique and martial arts skills will shine in them. As for Momoa’s mixed race ancestry: Duncan Idaho is really the only character in Dune who is described as not being white. “Idaho” is an American Indian name, and the character is described as having high cheekbones, a somewhat flat face, and dark, wavy hair like a karakul sheep. Momoa actually looks the part.
Oscar Isaac plays Duke Leto Atreides. This is actually a better choice than Lynch’s Jürgen Prochnow and Sci-Fi’s William Hurt, since the Atreides are supposed to have a Mediterranean look (brunette, aquiline noses) and descend from the ancient Greek house of Atreus. Isaac, who is of Cuban, Guatemalan, and French ancestry, looks the part. Chalamet, who is half-French, half-Jewish, does so as well.
A beautiful Scottish-Swedish actress, Rebecca Ferguson, plays Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother. She looks good, but not as good as Francesca Annis in Lynch’s film. Saskia Reeves in the Sci-Fi series was too earthy. Alice Kriege (the Borg Queen) was, however, utterly regal in Children of Dune.
Just as Kyle MacLachlan looked like he could have been the child of Jürgen Prochnow and Francesca Annis, Chalamet looks like he could be the son of Isaac and Ferguson.
Josh Brolin is a great choice for Gurney Halleck, the Atreides weapons master, who was memorably played by Patrick Steward in Lynch’s film.
I can’t complain about Villeneuve casting a Chinaman to play the traitor, Dr. Wellington Yueh, even though he was not described as oriental. Thufir Hawat, the Atreides mentat and Master of Assassins, is played by Stephen McKinley Henderson, who has some black ancestry, but who looks quite white. So even this choice doesn’t really stray from Herbert’s vision.
As for the Harkonnens: Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård plays the mad Baron, Vladimir Harkonnen. Dave Bautista plays his brutish nephew Glossu Rabban. Bautista is part Philippino, but is in whiteface. The Baron’s nephew, Feyd Rautha, does not appear in this movie. David Dastmalchian plays the Harkonnens’ twisted mentat Piter De Vries. With his Armenian, Iranian, and European ancestry, Dastmalchian is a strange looking guy and inspired casting for this role, which was memorably played by Brad Dourif in the Lynch film.
The Fremen leader Stigar is played by Javier Bardem. He’s a great actor and will be the best Stilgar yet, although Steven Berkoff was outstanding in Children of Dune.
Unfortunately, at this point Villeneuve’s casting goes completely off the rails.
The character of the Imperial Planetologist, Dr. Liet Kynes, is described by Herbert as a natural leader of astonishing nobility as well as a scientific genius. He was memorably portrayed by Max von Sydow in Lynch’s film. Villeneuve has decided to cast Kynes as a very black woman (Sharon Duncan-Brewster).
This is such outrageous political correctness that Villeneuve claimed that it was necessitated by his choice of a mulatto actress, Zendaya, to play Liet’s daughter Chani, who becomes Paul’s love interest.
This argument is complete nonsense, however, since Zendaya presumably had a white male parent, so there was no need other than blatant racial appropriation to change Kynes’ sex and race. And, of course, it is also racial appropriation to cast his daughter as a mulatto.
But it gets worse. Villeneuve casts two other Fremen with black actors as well. Harah, the wife of Stilgar, is played by Gloria Obianyo. Jamis, who fights with Paul and is killed, is played by Babs Olusanmokun.
This is a very bad sign, for it seems likely that Villeneuve wishes to portray the Fremen, who are the good guys, as primarily non-white. Given that their enemies, the Harkonnens, are depicted with shaved heads and conspicuously white skin, Villeneuve is turning Dune into an anti-white race-war prosecuted by non-whites and white race-mixers (Paul, Stilgar). This isn’t Frank Herbert’s Dune. Like every other piece of mainstream entertainment, Villeneuve’s Dune is just another version of the White Genocide script.
The fact that America has been convulsed for four months by people LARPing the same script is producing a great deal of fatigue for blacks and their white saviors. If COVID does not turn audiences away in droves, this blackface desecration of Herbert’s vision just might. In the past, I could overlook this kind of casting if other parts of the story were good. I don’t think I can do that anymore. This isn’t a game. Our race and civilization are dying, and the politicians, journalists, activists, and artists who are promoting the Great Replacement are simply evil. Denis Villeneuve has desecrated Dune. 2020.09.26 09:07 terrabrand [22M] Is this picnic we arranged considered a date?

Tomorrow, I am meeting this girl [F21] I met at a mutual friend's party and had deep conversations while being super drunk. I didn't remember much other than she sent a friend request on Facebook the next day. 6 months later during online classes, she noticed my name on the roster and talked with me. We decided to work together in our cybersecurity class alongside with my other friends. We then went out to get Boba Tea with my roommates (all women) last Friday and seemed to have a good time (don't worry, we all tested negative recently).
Later, we talked about how much fun we had and she asked if I wanted to do something next week? I made random suggestions and she agreed on a picnic. We just finished making our own food that we plan on bringing, though she didn't want any wine because she has to go to her part-time job on Sunday around noon. But I am curious, is this considered a date? I do think she is cute, but I understand dating is difficult during these circumstances in America. Also, my friends told me it is a date because it was a picnic, which implies a romantic gesture. What do you guys think?

2020.09.26 08:48 Chetdizzy Flashback: New Years Eve 2020

To celebrate New Years 2020, Donald Trump had “America’s #1 Event Band” play his annual gala. During this particular one, the “Novel Coronavirus” [Definition: New Crownvirus] infected China, its death count now tracked similarly to how we streamed performance online at my old hedge fund; I was a compliance officer.
When I think of the love/hate nature of the Ten Commandments, and I note the daily “New Crownvirus” death toll, I understand why I am one of two witnesses:
And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
My white horse is cocaine, and my crown has been Sept. 23, 2017. Your white horse may be this book, but everyone’s new crown is the Novel Coronavirus. Together, they pose a question to all human beings: Inferno or Paradise?
[Image: “Last Update: February 14, 2020 Novel Dead: 1,486 Novel Living: 1 Deadline: July 20, 2020”]
If you remember the nine steps we just reviewed, you’ll understand why new plagues are needed to raise the Novel Living figure. To overcome, you must know a version of, “Without realizing it, I mixed thought-screening with the belief that I had only months to live, beginning to fulfill the verse: the dead in Christ shall rise first.”
The day I received pixelation, a deal was brokered in heaven. I am to witness and report each “new crown”, or plague, transparently to the world in whatever form it may take. This book is, for lack of a better term, a compliance manual, open to public audit as it calls all believers to create new stories of their paths to heaven. Doing so expands the manual.

2020.09.26 08:09 AdequateSizeAttache Setting the Record Straight on the Evidence of Prior Sexual Abuse - Part 1

[This post has been split into two parts because of selfpost character limits.]

Introduction

It surprises me how often I see discussions involving speculation on whether JonBenet's UTIs, vaginitis, bedwetting, and history of frequent doctor visits indicate sexual abuse or not. These discussions invariably include people chiming in to share how they or someone they know had similar issues but were never abused. From these discussions, one could get the impression that itchy pageant costumes or Mr. Bubble useage are perfectly reasonable explanations for the evidence of sexual abuse.
The fact is, there's no need to speculate based on these things. There is physical evidence of prior sexual abuse. This is the evidence that should be at the forefront of discussions on the question of sexual abuse, not bubble baths or bedwetting. Issues such as vaginitis, UTIs, and bedwetting are not specific to sexual abuse; there are other possible explanations for them. There is no other possible explanation for the physical evidence besides trauma from physical penetration.
In reading discussions on the case over the years, it's always puzzled me how often the evidence of prior sexual abuse gets downplayed or dismissed. In considering why, I believe it is due primarily to these two common misconceptions:
Common Misconception 1 (as demonstrated above): The evidence of sexual abuse = vaginal irritation, UTIs, rashes, bedwetting, soiling, frequent doctor visits
Common Misconception 2: There is a medical debate on the issue and there's evidence to support both sides
Common Misconception 1 is a straw man argument — the actual evidence (the physical findings) is not being addressed or refuted.
Common Misconception 2 is an argument from false equivalence. An equal, rather than accurate, amount of weight is given to both sides of the issue. People see the mountain of conflicting information and contradicting opinions and think "It looks like expert opinion on this issue is divided; I guess a case can be made for either side." The enormous difference in expertise and experience between the various experts is ignored, as is the level of access they had to the evidence. This misconception gives the impression that all these expert opinions cancel each other out, rendering the issue debatable and open to interpretation. Consequently, the probative value of the evidence is undermined, making it easier for people to feel they can dismiss.
I think several factors have contributed to these two misconceptions:
However, if one takes a closer look at the evidence, it becomes apparent that it is not weighted equally on both sides. There is no medical debate, but a medical consensus. Every child sexual abuse expert who examined the genital findings from JonBenet's autopsy recognized physical signs of sexual abuse that predated her murder. Despite some objections to their conclusion, no one has disputed the physical findings of these experts. Their findings are compelling and should be seriously considered. In order to do that, though, one must first understand what the findings are and get acquainted with the doctors who testified to them.
The purpose of this post is to lay out everything that is known about the evidence of prior sexual abuse, but also to put it into a larger context so that hopefully it will be better understood. This will involve delving a bit into the history of child sexual abuse evaluations (it will become relevant later), as well as some background information of the experts involved. I will also go over dissenting opinions and address some common counterarguments and myths.

The evolution of modern pediatric sexual abuse evaluations: A brief historical timeline

1857 - One of the first known forensic medical studies on child sexual abuse, Étude médico-légale sur les attentats aux mœurs (Forensic study on offenses against morals) by French medical doctor and pathologist Auguste Ambroise Tardieu, is published. This treatise describes various forms of child abuse and maltreatment and includes anatomical drawings of genital findings which by modern standards are considered surprisingly accurate and ahead of its time. For some reason these efforts are largely ignored and it will be over a century before interest in sexual abuse evaluations from a medical perspective is resurrected.
1940s-50s - Child sexual abuse remains an unacknowledged taboo. Medical textbooks of this era tell doctors that children can contract STIs like gonorrhea from non-sexual means, such as from toilet seats, sharing towels, or sleeping in the same bed as an infected adult. Such myths will pervade for decades.
1962 - "The Battered Child Syndrome" by pediatrician C. Henry Kempe is published and physical child abuse is recognized. A watershed moment in pediatrics and child abuse protection. This article is about detecting hidden signs of physical abuse using modern radiological technology and newly proposed evaluation guidelines. Detecting chronic or hidden sexual abuse, however, will prove to be a more enduring challenge.
Late 1960s - By now all 50 states have child abuse protection laws in place.
1970s - Feminist campaigners and policymakers take up the cause of child sexual abuse. Most child protection workers during this period are social workers and therapists. The field of child abuse protection and evaluation is in its nascency.
1974 - Congress enacts the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA, P.L. 93-247). CAPTA creates a nationwide focus on establishing standardized protocols for dealing with all forms of child abuse and neglect. Mandatory reporting is one component of CAPTA. Before, only doctors were required to report cases of suspected child abuse; now, it is anyone in a position of authority — teachers, camp counselors, etc. Consequently, there is a significant increase in the reporting of child abuse cases and an increase in the demand of evaluations for suspected sexual abuse. Most of the physicians doing these medical evaluations are not researchers or academics but work with prosecutor's offices and law enforcement.
1975 - Suzanne M. Sgroi, physician pioneer in the field, publishes an article calling child sexual abuse "the last frontier in child abuse" which "remains a taboo topic in many areas."
1977 - C. Henry Kempe brings awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse by following up "The Battered Child Syndrome" with a landmark lecture at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics in New York City. The talk, titled "Sexual Abuse, Another Hidden Pediatric Problem" is published in the journal Pediatrics the following year.
1980s - Doctors start examining children's genitals, documenting, cataloging and trying to interpret their findings. Some use a colposcope, a binocular-like instrument originally used to detect cervical cancer, which magnifies the vaginal canal and tissues up to 4-30x. Some take anatomical measurements which they use to develop criteria for suspected abuse. They know what findings they see in abused children, but there is an acute lack of understanding of what "normal" or nonabused genital findings look like.
1981 - The article "Sexual Misuse: Rape, Molestation, and Incest" by Dr. Bruce Woodling is published in the journal Pediatric Clinics of North America.
Dr. Woodling is a California physician whose area of specialty is in sexual abuse forensics. The paper presents his research on what he has dubbed the "wink response test", a concept borrowed from Tardieu's 19th-century forensic manual. This test involves stroking the area near the anus with a cotton swab and gauging the response — contraction of the sphincter indicates no abuse, while an involuntary opening or 'winking' response indicates prior penetration. It was a test Tardieu developed to diagnose pederasty and Woodling has applied it to children as a way to detect anal abuse.
1982 - The wave of daycare sexual abuse hysteria of the 80s begins with the Kern County abuse allegations. The investigation and trial will culminate in the conviction of two couples (the McCuans and Kniffens) for sexually abusing several children. Dr. Woodling's wink response test and testimony play a part in their conviction. Several other similar cases in the same area at the time result in convictions of several others.
1984 - Daycare abuse hysteria continues with the Fells Acres and McMartin Preschool accusations. In the Fells Acre case, day care teacher Gerald Amirault will be put on trial and convicted of sexually assaulting and raping nine children. Questionable interview methods of the children and unproven genital evaluation criteria form the basis for the conviction.
The McMartin preschool case is the first to receive major media attention in the United States. Pediatrician Astrid Heger, under the tutelage of Dr. Bruce Woodling, conducts many of the evaluations of the McMartin children and diagnoses the majority of them as having been sexually abused. The criteria used for the evaluations are based primarily on Woodling's research as well as other published papers at the time (e.g., Cantwell's 1983 study on hymenal diameter measurements). Many of the children are found to have suspect genital findings such as notches, clefts, bands, tissue tags, ruffled or rolled hymenal edges, 'microtraumas' seen only with magnification, hymenal openings which measure over four millimeters, as well as positive reactions to Woodling's wink response test.
mid to late 80s - More abuse allegations and convictions including Country Walk, Wee Nursery, Bronx Five, Little Rascals day care, Glendale Montessori cases.
1988 - Dr. John McCann, a pediatrics professor and researcher from UCSF School of Medicine, drops a bombshell at the 18th annual child abuse convention in San Diego. He presents the results of a study he and his colleagues have worked on the past four years. They had gathered a control group of about 300 nonabused/"normal" children and meticulously documented and photographed their anuses and genitals, the first such study to do so. What they learned shocked McCann and everyone else in the field. Many of the anatomic findings which some specialists were claiming to be signs of abuse were commonly found in the nonabused children. The study showed that the large variation of anatomical features of childrens' genitals were, in fact, just that — variations of normal. This meant that parents and caretakers were being reported and convicted based on erroneous unscientific criteria. This presentation, titled "Anatomical Standardization of Normal Prepubertal Children," is a watershed moment in the field.
1989 - The first paper based on McCann's study ("Perianal findings in prepubertal children selected for nonabuse: a descriptive study") is published in the journal Child Abuse & Neglect. Among its conclusions, it shows that Dr. Woodling's wink response test has no scientific basis.
The impact of McCann's study influences leaders in the field to call for an overhaul in the way sexual abuse evaluation criteria are approached:
Medical Examination for Sexual Abuse: Have We Been Misled?
The more we learn, the less we know "with reasonable medical certainty"?
1990s - This decade sees an explosion of research and progress. The second paper based on McCanns' landmark study ("Genital findings in prepubertal girls selected for nonabuse: a descriptive study") is published in the journal Pediatrics in 1990. The dropping of charges in the McMartin preschool trial, also in 1990, marks the beginning of the winding down of the nation's abuse hysteria. McCann's research is presented as evidence by the defense in some abuse trials, such as the McMartin and Little Rascals daycare cases.
1992 - A classification system for evaluating children for suspected sexual abuse is proposed by Dr. Joyce Adams, Katherine Harper and Sandra Knudson. This later becomes known as the Adams classification system (keep this system in mind as we will be referring back to it) and will be periodically revised with updated criteria throughout the following decades. It will be adopted and used in the field of child abuse pediatrics and gynecology worldwide. John McCann's research help form a basis for this system.
mid to late 90s - More research based on cross-sectional, case-control, and longitudinal studies of abused and nonabused children are published which improves understanding and accuracy of evaluation criteria: Berenson, Heger, Adams, Emans, Kellogg, Kerns, McCann, Muram, Finkel, etc. Due to the errors of the previous decade, specialists in the field are highly conscientious and prudent about differentiating nonabuse from abuse criteria.

The evidence of prior sexual abuse in the JonBenet Ramsey case: What we know

When Boulder County Coroner Dr. John Meyer performed JonBenet's autopsy, he identified signs of acute vaginal trauma which he believed was consistent with digital penetration. What we didn't find out until the publication of James Kolar's book Foreign Faction in 2012 is that Dr. Meyer also saw indications of prior sexual contact. Concerned about this possibility, he sought a specialist opinion and brought Dr. Andrew Sirotnak to the morgue to examine JonBenet's genital injuries. Dr. Sirotnak was a child abuse pediatrician who headed the Child Protection Team at Children's Hospital Colorado. He confirmed Meyer's opinion that there were signs of prior sexual contact.
Here are the relevant passages from Kolar's book:
  • Dr. Meyer also observed signs of chronic inflammation around the vaginal orifice and believed that these injuries had been inflicted in the days or weeks before the acute injury that was responsible for causing the bleeding at the time of her death. This irritation appeared consistent with prior sexual contact.
[Foreign Faction: Who Really Kidnapped JonBenet?, A. James Kolar, p. 58]
  • Following the meeting, Dr. Meyer returned to the morgue with Dr. Andy Sirontak, Chief of Denver Children's Hospital Child Protection Team, so that a second opinion could be rendered on the injuries observed to the vaginal area of JonBenet. He would observe the same injuries that Dr. Meyer had noted during the autopsy protocol and concurred that a foreign object had been inserted into the opening of JonBenet's vaginal orifice and was responsible for the acute injury witnessed at the 7:00 o'clock position. Further inspection revealed that the hymen was shriveled and retracted, a sign that JonBenet had been subjected to some type of sexual contact prior to the date of her death. Dr. Sirontak could not provide an opinion as to how old those injuries were or how many times JonBenet may have been assaulted and would defer to the expert opinions of other medical examiners.
    [Kolar, p. 61]
  • Dr. Meyer was concerned about JonBenet's vaginal injuries, and he, along with Boulder investigators, sought the opinions of a variety of other physicians in the days following her autopsy. Dr. Sirontak, a pediatrician with Denver Children's Hospital, had recognized signs of prior sexual trauma but neither he nor Dr. Meyer were able to say with any degree of certainty what period of time may have been involved in the abuse.
    [Kolar, p. 63]
Boulder Police would later ask several child sexual abuse experts to review the autopsy findings* in order to help them determine if there was evidence of prior sexual abuse. In addition to Andrew Sirotnak, these are the experts whom we know were consulted:
Richard Krugman
James Monteleone
Valerie Rao
John McCann
That's right — that John McCann. The same John McCann who was responsible for putting child sexual abuse evaluations onto scientific footing and who happened to establish the standards for what is considered normal and abnormal in pediatric genital exams was consulted on the JonBenet Ramsey case.
In Steve Thomas's 2001 deposition for the Wolf v Ramsey civil trial, Thomas says that McCann came recommended by the FBI. There's a reason for that, which is that McCann was regarded as one of the the foremost authorities on interpreting pediatric anogenital findings in cases of suspected abuse. Thomas also refers to McCann, Monteleone, and Rao as the "blue ribbon pediatric panel." Based on various sources, we know that there was at least one meeting in Boulder in September 1997 involving McCann, Rao, Monteleone, and Krugman.
Here is the relevant passage from Thomas's book:
In mid-September, a panel of pediatric experts from around the country reached one of the major conclusions of the investigation - that JonBenet had suffered vaginal trauma prior to the day she was killed.
There were no dissenting opinions among them on the issue, and they firmly rejected any possibility that the trauma to the hymen and chronic vaginal inflammation were caused by urination issues or masturbation. We gathered affidavits stating in clear language that there were injuries "consistent with prior trauma and sexual abuse"...."There was chronic abuse"..."Past violation of the vagina"...."Evidence of both acute injury and chronic sexual abuse." In other words, the doctors were saying it had happened before.
...
The results, however, were not what is known in the legal world as "conclusive" - which means that there can be no other interpretation - and I would fully expect defense lawyers to argue something different. Nevertheless, our highly qualified doctors had brought in a remarkable finding.
[JonBenet: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation, Steve Thomas & Don Davis, p. 253]
The experts expected to testify in court had the case gone to trial. As we know, there was no criminal trial, but we know the experts were called to testify before the grand jury.
*During JonBenet's autopsy, an instrument called a colposcope was used to examine and document her genital injuries. This is standard procedure in forensic pathology in cases of suspected child abuse or sexual assault. Colposcopy illuminates and magnifies the vaginal cavity and is used to identify abnormal changes to tissue and the internal genital structures. The experts would have relied on these colposcopic photos as well as histologic samples of JonBenet's vaginal mucosa in addition to the autopsy report, coroner's notes, and lab results.

The physical findings explained

These are the genital findings we know were discovered at JonBenet's autopsy:
Ref. no. Finding Source
1 Chronic inflammation around vaginal orifice FF
2 Small amount of dried blood on perineum AR
3 Small amount of dried and semifluid blood on skin of fourchette and in vestibule AR
4 Hyperemia of vestibule and vaginal wall AR
5 Abrasion on hymenal orifice at 7 o'clock position, involving the hymen and vaginal wall AR
6 Epithelial erosion with underlying capillary congestion of tissue from 7'oclock AR
7 Hymenal orifice measuring 1cm x 1cm AR
8 A lack of hymenal tissue between the 10 and 2 o'clock positions AR
9 Vascular congestion and focal interstitial chronic inflammation of vaginal mucosa AR
10 Bruise on hymen BP
11 Three dimensional thickening from inside to outside of inferior hymenal rim BP
12 Narrowing of inferior hymenal rim to base of hymen BP
13 Exposure of vaginal rugae BP
AR = Autopsy Report
BP = Bonita Papers
FF = Foreign Faction
What do these physical findings mean?
Here is a quick break down:
  • 5, 6, and 10, with corresponding bleeding 2 and 3, are signs of acute trauma from the time of the murder.
  • 7 is something that gets brought up as evidence of prior abuse ("enlarged hymenal opening"). However, criteria based on hymenal opening measurements were removed from the Adams classification guidelines in 1996. McCann did not include it in his criteria for abuse, but said it supported the findings for abuse. Since the late 90s/early 2000s, specialists have tried to move away from using measurement-based criteria as it is difficult to do precisely. Research data has shown that measurements can vary with the examination position, technique, age of the child, state of relaxation of the child, and the skill of the examiner.
  • 8 describes a crescentic hymen, a common variation of hymen types. This is a normal finding. Generally, discrepancies of the anterior half of the hymen (above the 3 and 9 o'clock positions) are not considered concerning and missing segments, notches, clefts can be normal findings. It is the inferior half of the hymen (below the 3 and 9 o'clock positions) where experts look for indicators of abuse.
  • 11-13 are findings observed by John McCann that describe structural changes of the hymen from a prior penetration. 12 describes a transection (a healed laceration) of the inferior portion of the hymen.
  • 1, 4, 9 can be caused by a variety of other conditions and on their own are not classified as indicators for abuse. In the case where findings indicating abuse are also present, they need to be considered in context.
McCann's findings
The most important of these findings to understand is 12, which is one of McCann's observations outlined in the Bonita Papers.
There was a three dimensional thickening from inside to outside on the inferior hymeneal rim with a bruise apparent on the external surface of the hymen and a narrowing of the hymeneal rim from the edge of the hymen to where it attaches to the muscular portion of the vaginal openings. At the narrowing area, there appeared to be very little if any hymen present.
To understand what this means, take a look at the white line segment labeled "Hymenal width" in this colposcopic photo (warning: image of vagina/hymen). It demarcates the length of the hymenal membrane from the rim/edge to the base where it attaches to the vaginal wall.
A narrowing of the hymenal rim means the hymenal membrane is reduced in dimension from the rim/edge toward the base. When the rim is narrowed all the way to the base, that is called a complete cleft or a transection. A transection is a discontinuity of the inferior hymenal rim that extends to or through the base of the hymen. Basically, it is a telltale residual absence of tissue from a healed complete laceration.
If this is difficult to visualize, here is a figure which shows what transections look like:
Figure 3: Hymenal Membrane Characteristics
[source]
The Adams classification system
In the fields of child abuse pediatrics and pediatric gynecology, the set of guidelines most widely used in interpreting genital findings is the Adams classification system.
If we were to look at the most recently revised version (2018), we would see that it identifies certain "findings caused by trauma":
These findings are highly suggestive of abuse, even in the absence of a disclosure from the child, unless the child and/or caretaker provides a timely and plausible description of accidental anogenital straddle, crush or impalement injury, or past surgical interventions that are confirmed from review of medical records.
Among those findings that are "highly suggestive of abuse" includes point 37, listed in the subsection titled "Residual (healing) injuries to genital/anal tissues" under section E:
Healed hymenal transection/complete hymen cleft, a defect in the hymen below the 3-9 o'clock location that extends to or through the base of the hymen, with no hymenal tissue discernible at that location
This is precisely what Dr. McCann described having observed in JonBenet.
A transection in the inferior half of the hymen of a prepubertal child is a significant finding because it is considered a clear indication of a prior penetrating injury:
  • Multiple studies have noted the presence of hymenal transections only in prepubertal girls with a history of disclosed sexual abuse.
[ Sara T. Stewart, MD. Hymenal Characteristics in Girls with and without a History of Sexual Abuse, p. 533]
  • Hymenal transections are very rarely seen in prepubertal girls who have not been sexually abused. However, a demonstrated transection, based on multiple studies, is commonly viewed as “a clear but uncommon indicator of past trauma.”
[Mishori, R., Ferdowsian, H., Naimer, K. et al. The little tissue that couldn’t – dispelling myths about the Hymen’s role in determining sexual history and assault.]
  • Thus a deep notch, transection, or perforation on the inferior portion of the hymen may be considered as a definitive sign of sexual abuse or other trauma.
[Berenson, et al. A case-control study of anatomic changes resulting from sexual abuse, p. 829]
  • A transection of the posterior hymen between 4 and 8 o’clock in prepubertal girls suggests genital penetrating trauma; however, the presence of this finding is not confirmatory of sexual abuse. Posterior hymenal findings including transections between 4 and 8 o’clock, deep notches, and perforations were not seen in studies of prepubertal girls without a history of genital trauma from sexual abuse included in this systematic review. Therefore, one can conclude that the posterior hymenal findings of transections, deep notches, and perforations are extremely infrequent findings among children without a history of genital trauma from sexual abuse or other means. [...]
However, because the prevalence of posterior hymenal findings (between 4 and 8 o’clock) such as transections, deep notches, and perforations are near zero in nonabused prepubertal girls, the presence of these examination findings suggests genital trauma from sexual abuse. In the absence of known genital trauma from accidental means, the possibility for sexual abuse must be strongly considered. In a prepubertal girl with a posterior hymenal finding of a transection (between 4 and 8 o’clock), a deep notch (between 4 and 8 o’clock), or a perforation, a report to child protective services should be strongly considered. At a minimum, an examination by a child abuse specialist should occur to confirm these findings and to help provide a careful interpretation regarding the likelihood of sexual abuse.
[Molly Curtin Berkoff, MD, MPH; Adam J. Zolotor, MD, MPH; Kathi L. Makoroff, MD; et al. Has This Prepubertal Girl Been Sexually Abused?, p. 2790]
If any doctor or medical provider today observed a transection on the inferior half of the hymen of a prepubertal female patient, he/she would be required to make a report for suspected sexual abuse and an explanation would be required for how that healed injury got there. In forty years of research, this finding has not been seen in any other instance besides from penetrating trauma. In prepubertal girls, it is indicative of sexual abuse unless it can be shown otherwise.

What the evidence says

The evidence says JonBenet had been subjected to at least one penetration of the vagina through the hymenal membrane prior to her murder. The penetration caused a complete laceration of the inferior hymenal membrane. After the laceration healed, a transection and other structural changes of the hymen remained.
The age of the prior injury could not be determined, but based on his research on the healing of hymenal lacerations of prepubertal girls, it was McCann's opinion that it was more than ten days old. His research has shown that "most signs of an acute [hymenal laceration] injury were gone within 7 to 10 days." Some of the experts thought the prior injury could have been weeks or months old.
While the evidence could conclusively prove only one prior penetration, the experts believed there had been more than one instance of penetration/sexual contact and that JonBenet's genital findings indicated abuse that had been repeated or ongoing. They were unable to determine how many incidents over what period of time.
Four of the five experts (Sirotnak, Monteleone, Rao, McCann) were confident in their opinion that JonBenet's genital findings were diagnostic of sexual abuse. One (Krugman) could not disagree with that assessment, but lacking certain forensic evidence (i.e., the victim's testimony, the confirmed presence of sperm, or an STI), was unwilling to assume a sexual motive for the abuse. He felt there was evidence only of physical abuse of the genitals.

What else could explain the prior penetration/ hymenal trauma besides sexual abuse?

There are three known causes of transections in the inferior hymenal rim in prepubertal girls — penetrative sexual abuse, accidental penetrating trauma, and surgical intervention.
Most accidental genital injuries sustained by children are straddle-type injuries that involve a fall onto the horizontal bar of a bicycle, jungle gym, or picket fence. This type of accident involves compression of the soft tissues against the bony margins of the pelvic outlet. Trauma is usually limited to the external structures of the genital area (e.g., labia, clitoral hood, fourchette, perineum).
Accidental penetrating or impalement injuries that involve trauma to the hymen are relatively rare:
Of 161 accidental genital injuries reported in the literature, 3.7% involved the hymen.
[Child Abuse: Medical Diagnosis and Management, 4th ed. Antoinette Laskey and Andrew Sirotnak (eds.), p. 359]
However, they do occur and the resulting injuries can mimic those of sexual abuse. In such cases, it is important that the cause of the injury be confirmed.
Whether an acute or healed genital or anal injury is identified, it is incumbent on the medical professional to obtain a complete history of the nature of the injury. [...]
Key differences in the history of accidental trauma, such as a straddle injury, are that accidental injuries are more commonly observed by a third party, medical attention is sought immediately after the injury, a scene-of-injury visit confirms the plausibility of the injuries and the accompanying history, and the pattern of injury is consistent with the history.
[Child Abuse: Medical Diagnosis and Management, 4th ed. Antoinette Laskey and Andrew Sirotnak (eds.), p. 359]
If JonBenet's prior hymenal injury was the result of an accident or a past surgical procedure, it should be reflected in her medical records and easy to prove. An accidental penetrating injury that results in a complete laceration of the hymen is considered severe, one that would be painful and cause bleeding. It would be expected that most parents or caretakers would seek medical attention for their child's injury.
We know the Ramseys were not timid or frugal when it came to getting medical attention for JonBenet's injuries and ailments. We have records of her being seen by the doctor for various bumps, falls, and injuries, such as a bent fingernail from a fall, a bruised nose from faceplanting at a grocery store, a bump on the brow from a tripping fall, and a small cut to the cheek from a golf club swing. If JonBenet had sustained an accidental genital injury that resulted in a severe laceration, I find it very hard to believe she would not have been taken to the doctor for such an injury when she was taken for lesser injuries and ailments.
Clearly, there was nothing in her medical records that could account for such an injury or the Ramseys would have provided it to police.

2020.09.26 05:20 Delicious_mod I fought the law and the law...

I woke up at 1800. 6PM. I can't have gone to bed later than midnight. How the fuck have I been passed out for 18 odd hours?

I called the cops on CA Girlfriend last night. The experience was less than pleasant.

After what I thought was her last booze run of the day I dared to think things might return to normal. We talked, albeit in a guarded fashion. Lot of mumbling and quiet, drawled, words. I invited her to bed for some cuddles, trying to provoke some proof of normality and she broke down. My dad this, my dad that, she sobs. I've heard it all before. I stroke her hair and try to soothe her. There there, it's ok, let's go back to normal.

Things seemed to be getting OK; she bought some paint when she went for her booze run and I get to to work covering up the orange smears she made on the wall and front door. "I would have done that...it's my fault" she mumbles, contritely. It's ok, I tell her, hoping I've scored some brownie points by not bringing up how psychotic she was in smearing shit all over the place.

We return to a kind of normalcy again where I'm playing on my laptop and she's watching tv. Either later today or tomorrow, I reckon, things will be back to normal.

She quietly asks if I can wash the dishes. This is one of my few chores that she normally bitches about it if I don't get on it ASAP; "the kitchen looks like a mess!", "I could find x, y, z, quicker if the sink wasn't full of dirty plates!" etc. but this time she quietly mumbles some purpose here. "I want to make us some soup". Cool, I'm up for that. Not especially hungry but it's easier to eat than anything else while I'm drinking. Shit eating grin while I eat her soup and things will go back to normal.

Then it starts.

She's outside smoking a cigarette for an unusually long time when I smell burning. Shit's stuck to the bottom of the pot I guess. She comes in and says "it smells like something burned, why weren't you watching that!?" I just say "oops, sorry", and not "if you cook something it's your responsibility to look after it."

She's playing around with her phone and starts screaming about Googlemaps; apparently our local Fry's is located in Brazil. "Why are you looking up Fry's anyway? What's going on?" I ask. "I need a new pan to cook the matzoh balls because the ones we have are shit!" she says, like I should have known that, and the fact that she's successfully cooked matzoh ball soup before isn't a thing. I die a little inside. Obviously looking for an excuse to leave the house and pick up more booze. I try to think of a reason to stop her, but I can't. Sure, love, Lyft will be here in 2 minutes.

I'm expecting her to be gone for a few hours when I get a call not 30 minutes after she's left. "Which pan should I buy? Fry's has an individual one for $40 or a whole set for $100!?" for fucks sake. We don't need more pans. We have all the kitchenware we need. I tell her to get whatever she wants and write off the next 2-4 hours as an opportunity to watch a movie, or have a good gaming sesh with some drinks.

30 minutes later I hear a loud banging at the door. I open it to find her stood there with a cooking set tucked under her arm. I can't even. She storms into the apartment "why haven't you reheated the soup? You knew I was coming!" grasp on reality, this is what we were arguing about. "Uhh, sorry, forgot" I mumble. "No, no, no that pot won't do. Here, use one of the ones I just bought". It's fucking soup, that you cooked earlier today. What the actual fuck.

I empty a whole container of the soup she cooked into one of her new pots when she abruptly gets up and walks out the door like she has a purpose. I follow her outside on the pretense of just wanting to smoke a cigarette. I want to suss out how wasted she is. She's on the phone to someone - "yeah, I just got home" - I pick up snatches of conversation - "sure babe, whenever, my address is [home]" - are you fucking kidding me, she's actually inviting one of her creepers to OUR home? Bite down, pay it no mind.

I go back in and wash a couple of a dishes when I notice something unusual - complete silence. I turn around; she's not on the couch. I can't hear her ranting outside, but maybe she's smoking a cigarette in silence. I open the front door and go outside to our porch and...it's empty. She's gone. She just fucked off without so much as a by-your-leave.

I think back to her earlier phone conversation. For fuck's sake, is she REALLY inviting someone over? I give it 5 minutes before I suit up and go charging down the street. There she is, bottom of the road. With "Dave", a "friend". Rage goes through the ceiling. "Fuck off" I say, "or I'll call the police. You want to take her, take her, but you're not coming on my fucking property". "Nigga what the fuck?" he says "I was her friend before you even knew her!" "You're not her friend!" I scream "you're an old pervert looking to score. Don't you dare pretend to be her friend!" Dude walks into the middle of the street and beckons me like I'm going to street fight him or something. Thirsty ass motherfucker actually took a bus across town because he knew she was drunk and thought he in with a chance. I just laugh. "Fuck you" I wave him off, "and fuck you for bringing him here" I say to her.

She's out of here tonight. I walk back with the intention of throwing her shit on the porch. Stupid crazy bitch. She comes back maybe 5 minutes later, saying I'm out of line and she can invite whoever she wants to her house. I don't have the time to point out how much she's living in crazy town. I tell her to get her stuff and leave, that I'm sick of her insanity.

I'm not sure if it's my words or the fact I'm putting her stuff on the porch that sets her off, but she hits me. I reflexively push her back and, due to the fact that she's wasted and has zero coordination, she trips over something and ends up on her back. Minor comedy moment: a 3/4th's empty pint of vodka flies out of her hoody as she falls down. I already knew she was fucking wasted, but it feels good to confirm she drank that much in such a short time. "You just broke my hip!" she squeals. I tell her she didn't break her hip and to stop being a drama queen. I try to pick her up off the ground and she starts wailing "don't touch me! You broke my hip!" For fucks sake, her hip isn't broken and I'm not in the mood for histrionics. I tell her to pick her ass up and go or I'm calling the cops. She says she needs an ambulance. I tell her if I call one the police will come too and that's not good for her. "Go ahead" she sneers "the police will be very interested when I tell them of how you just assaulted me."

Full of drunken bravado I take her up on the challenge and dial 911. I ask for an ambulance because she fell over after we had a physical altercation. Dispatch asks if I'm aware they have to send the police too, like I've just indicted myself or something. Sure, whatever, send the police, I say.

I go inside and leave her, sprawled amongst her things. When I go outside maybe 10 minutes later, she's gone. Or so it would seem at first glance. Her legs are sticking out from under the porch table, where she's crawled to faceplant, for some reason. "You're in so much trouble" she mumbles. I can't see her face, but it sounds like she's talking through a mouth full of concrete. "When I tell the police you pushed me over and broke my hip, you're going away for two and a half years." Whatever, I'm not really interested in her drunken threats. "You have mental health issues you need to work on", I say, "who the fuck lies about their own daughter being dead?" I can tell that catches her off guard because she stops ranting for a minute "No, no, she is dead! [Her ex] couldn't handle it so had another daughter with that name!" More bullshit.

The police don't show up until an hour and a half after I called. I walk over to talk to them and beckon them to my apartment when the cop makes a pinched face and waves his hand under his nose "whew, buddy, you been drinking?" yeah, no shit, but that ain't a crime you pint-sized twerp. I tell him I have and she has too. The police ask me a whole bunch of questions that I feel don't have anything to do with my story. "Who was this guy she tried to bring over?" "if she doesn't live here why is all her stuff here?" "how long have you two been together?" "can you demonstrate again what you did when she hit you?" "how much did you see her drink?" It felt like they were fishing for something.
It's an open and shut case; two drunk people have an argument, girl hits guy, guy reacts, girl falls over and hurts self. The fact that I'm fucking coherent, walking and talking, while she's semi-conscious and under a dinner table should tell you volumes about my story. The cop's a power tripping midget. Asks me for my date of birth and when I give it to him, without thinking, in the English dating convention he makes an exaggerated show of looking up from his notepad "you're aware there's only 12 months in the year, right?" "yeah, I was raised in England, I'm just used to saying my birthday like that. Comes out every now and then", "yeah well", he snaps his pen "you're in America now." Whatever. Despite the temptation, I'm not going to sass the little shit; I feel like that's what landed me in jail last time I had a scrape with the police. He says I'm not being arrested because they can't find probable cause and CAG isn't pressing charges. I try not to roll my eyes. Stupid fucks obviously thought I was the aggressor here. Ok, yessir, whatever you say. I just want them all the hell out of there.

I walk to the store for more booze when the circus has gone. Get back and enjoy me some drinkies when she calls a couple of hours later. I expect her to sound hateful, accusatory, instead she sounds oddly calm. Maybe they've pumped her full of meds. She said she left her debit card and wants me to read the numbers aloud to her, and she wants "Dave's" phone number. I can't see her phone and I'm not rooting through her stuff to find her debit card. What the hell is she going to buy online from the hospital anyway? I pretend it's a bad line and keep saying "I can't hear you...you're breaking up!" and she hangs up out of frustration.

3 missed calls from her and a voicemail saying she's sending a taxi driver over to get her phone and debit card.

What happens now? Well, more drink, of course. Long term...shit, I don't even want to think of that. All of her clothes and stuff are still here so she's not going to just sky out. Plus she has a few hundred dollars worth of furniture here. She said she's going to be in the hospital for 2 weeks. She'll love that. When she's had a drink she likes going to the hospital to be fawned over. Best case scenario, she sobers the fuck up and realizes what a cunt she's been. But she won't. This will all be my fault, of course. I'm tempted to use her debit card and withdraw rent money before she inevitably cancels it.
There's a house showing at fucking 9AM tomorrow and the place looks like a dump. I was kinda hoping she'd clean it with me. Balls.
Chairs, fellas.
